I can definitely understand not liking Mayfair. I personally would never recommend someone stay there (unless one got comped or points at one of the really upscale hotels).
Curious why you picked Mayfair but that is water under the bridge now. |
I spent seven months in the Uk last year in the market town of Bridport... Dorset and I had a car for the whole time, gave me terrific freedom . I organised a long term rental for 90 pounds a week. I visited heaps of towns and really like Winchester, beautiful chalk rivers. I also second Stamford... slightly biased as I went to school there many moons a ago.. I’ll be interested in your decision so please keep us updated as you go.. |
We really need to decide on a country. I don't think it is helping at all to mix England proposals with French proposals. Apples and pears.

To schnauzer - 90 pounds a week is incredibly cheap. I would love to go back to the UK for a longer period but accommodation can be very costly. Do you mind saying more about where you found your deal and what you got for that amount?

Thanks, Kay Do they mean £90 per night. If it was £90 per week, either that was decades (centuries?) ago or some kind of very special arrangement. It's not even remotely close to the market rates in the types of areas mentioned so frankly, i don't know why it was mentioned without explanation as it can be wildly misleading, especially given the OP's requirements. |
Agree. 90 pounds a week? We can't even find basic accommodations in Morocco for that price when we go for the winter there. And Morocco's cheap.
I agree with kerouac that we need to choose a country here. Too many options in too many places. I think the OP needs to focus. Otherwise, we're really just spinning our wheels. |

I've read back to the OP's original request. One thing is that if they were staying in Otley (for example) for 4 weeks they would find themselves welcomed into the community and have the opportunity to join the culture which I doubt would occur in Barnes. Still up to the OP. As others have said the town is surrounded by fantastic places to visit, one thing that writers have got wrong is that Bradford is the nearest city. Otley is in a city, it is called Leeds. While Bradford is a typical post industrial melting-pot northern city (if such a thing existed) Leeds has a vibrant wealthy modern centre with some lovely Victorian buildings, two World Class museums, two Universities and some of the best shopping outside of London. If it reminds me of anywhere it is Bordeaux but bigger and taller. Still can't type more as the Elite Women's World Championhip cycle race goes past the house in about an hour and I need to get outside to watch it. |
Sunday's was even wetter, with the winner saying he had never seen conditions like it, just a normal day in the winter for us. :-)

13 km before the Finish, our great Hope, Mathieu vd Poel had had it. But Annemiek v Vleuten and Anna vd Breggen were great in the women's race. |

Christina Thanks for your comment about Aix. I think you are right that if we settle in Provence next September, it would be the best choice. It seems to be a pretty, lively, small city with some important sights, parks, and art. We could go to Avignon, Arles and Lyon on the weekends. kerouac Looking at France and Italy now that my DD has committed to study abroad in Florence. I started a different thread about Modena and Italian towns. I wish I could change this thread’s title and untag England but I cannot figure it out. |
For a smaller city in Italy, Como is beautiful. In a somewhat larger category, Genoa is extremely underrated.
