I would like any input on the walled village of Monteriggioni. Has anyone eaten at Il Pozzo, located there? Our travel agent has suggested we visit the village and have lunch at the restaurant. Thanks!

Monteriggioni is a very cute, little walled city with about 150 or so inhabitants. It has, I believe about 14 towers all remaining intact. It has a nice main square which is becoming a bit more touristy than it was when we first visited 3 years ago. Il Pozzo gets rave reviews from lots of guides and real people. I've not managed to eat there but from everything I've read, I don't think you'd be wasting a lunch if you stopped there to eat. The village is certainly worth the walk around. Be sure to stop somewhere on the plain as you approach to take pictures of the entire city surrounded by the wall with its many towers.

We first spotted Monteriggioni while driving to Siena. Back then (About 20 yrs) we drove right into the main square. Was a very quiet place. Now, one must park outside the walls and 'tis very busy. Il Pozzo wasn't there our first stop, but on the advice of several friends we had lunch there last trip (about two years ago). I was advised to have the pasta with Wild Boar sauce. It was delicious!! Another friend recommends the mushrooms (if that's your thing.)

Porcini mushrooms? The Parmeggiano Regiano of fungi?

Dear Ira... alas... I know not. My husband ordered them on La Friend's advice and was not a happy camper. But then... he does not have a very sophisticated palate -:)

We stopped there on our Italy trip two years ago and lunched at Il Pozzo. I don't remember what I had, but I remember the food was good and the garden area where we were seated was lovely. (All confirmed by my journal entry) It was a wonderful couple of hours on a day trip.

We had dinner there last March and it was wonderful. The town is quite deserted at night (maybe too early in the season?) but the restaurant is just inside the front gate as I recall.
