Montepulciano to Rome airport in morning?

Hello, we plan to be in Tuscany (last stop Montepulciano) and will have a rental car. We have an 11:30 am flight out of FCO Rome. Should we risk driving down and returning the car that morning, or the night before, which would require, ugh, that we find a hotel near the airport. Thanks.

Is this a weekday or a weekend day? What time of year?

It's about a 2.5 hour drive if you don't have any traffic, plus time to turn in your rental car, plus going thru security, plus any last minute shopping.

Do you want to leave Montepulciano at 6am or stay near the airport the night before and not be rushed.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Rome- Eur Parco Dei Medici, which was just a few miles from the airport. Reasonable price, great breakfast.

Definitely spend the night near the airport.

During the 3 hour ride to the airport anything can happen. Even tho' it will be a Saturday morning, if there's an accident or if they are working on a section of road, you could be seriously delayed.

I have a similar question. We have a flight out of Rome at 2:30 p.m. on a Saturday in May. We plan to spend our last night in Orvieto before flying to Zurich. How early should we depart Orvieto to allow plenty of time for traffic and browsing at the airport. I've looked at mappy.com but can only come up with directions to the main city, not the airport. We're returning the car to Hertz. Thanks

Look up Orvieto to Fuminicino, Lazio, Italy, instead of Rome. That's where the airport is located. On mapquest it's a little over 1.5 hours -- allow time for traffic/road construction. Shouldn't be a problem.

Be sure to allow time to turn in rental, check in/baggage, going thru security, and do last minute duty free shopping.

Luv2travel - you might also consider returning your car in Orvieto (instead of Fiumcino) and taking the train from there to Rome and then the Leonardo Express to Fiumcino. That way you don't have to worry about any traffic delays driving back from Orvieto. If you want to drive, it's about 1.5 to 2 hour drive from Orvieto to Fiumcino (assuming no significant traffic delays).

We drove from Siena to FCO the day before our flight and am I glad. We ran into an accident about 63km from the airport and it really slowed us down.
You never know what will happen. Our flight was at 11:30 also. So be safe rather than sorry.
If you get to the hotel early enough, some of the major hotels used to have a shuttle that will take you into Rome and pick you up. You could spend a few hours enjoying Rome.
