Montepulciano to Positano---by train or car?

We will be travelling between Montepulciano and Positano in September. We will have a car while in Tuscany and were wondering if we should leave it in a nearby town and take the train down to the Amalfi coast or if it would be just as easy to drive to Sorrento, leave the rental car there and take the bus or ferry to Positano. We love road trips and autogrilles but don't want to attempt this if it turns into an 8 hour trip. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I would drive it. I have done the reverse and it is not bad at all. The choice will be a taxi to Positano from Sorrento or the local SITA bus. The bus leaves from about a mile from the car drop.

It would only be an 8 hour trip if you stopped or wanted it to be. It would be a 419 km trip with 370 km on the autostrada--between 4 and 5 hour drive "depending".

Like Bob, we also did the reverse route back in the day but probably wouldn't now--too much to see! We still like the driving option once you already have a car-convenient. Your decision might come down to ease of drop-off, research your drop off point in Sorrento.

Not familiar with the train options other than knowing you will have to change trains in Naples for Sorrento.
