Montepulciano to Florence via N222

We are heading from Montepulciano to Florence, and driving the N222. I've heard from others that this is a very scenic route. What are recommended places to stop along this route?

Where's a nice place to stop for lunch -- I'm thinking somewhere in Greve? Anybody have any recommendations?

Hi Budman, in Castellina in Chianti we had the best lunch at a slow food ristorante called Albergaccio di Castellina on via Fiorentina, 63

http://www.albergacciocast.com

They have an extensive wine cellar and the food is presented with loving care.
At the time (a year ago) they did not take credit cards, but maybe now they do.

We still talk about our afternoon in the beautiful ristorante.

Oh, Budman, I wrote too soon I think. I'm not sure if it is on N222 or not, but keep it in mind if you are in that area.

You can catch glimpses of the pretty dining room and the outside terrace on their website. The utilitarian room you see is an annex it looks like for big parties. You would think they would show their prettier rooms on the web site! But there is that pretty bare breasted woman lying down in grapes.....

Budman,

We recently had an outstanding lunch at "La Bottega", which is on the grounds of Castello di Volpaia in Radda.

Address is: Piazza della Torre,2
Volpaia
Radda in Chianti
Phone is: 05777380001

The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays.

SS 222 (the via Chiantigiana) runs from north of Siena to Florence....from Montepulciano to Siena, you will take the SS 2 or country roads.

No shortage of places to eat along the stretch....I would recommend a short detour between Panzano and Greve--take the road to Lamole and eat at the Ristoro di Lamole. Wonderful food and beautiful views.

Failing that, Panzano has several nice places to eat...Il Vescovino or the wine bar on the main piazza come to mind immediately.

SeaUrchin, the place looks nice. I don't know if my wife will approve of my staring at a "pretty bare-breasted woman lying in grapes."

Weadles, Oops, it's a Tuesday that we are heading to Florence.

Jim_Zurer, someone mentioned that Lamole was "not inexpensive." Since we're booked in Florence that evening for a nice dinner, I didn't want to spend a hundred dollars on lunch. Maybe I'll try out something in Panzano.

Anybody else have any recommendations? Don't necessarily want a 40-50 Euro per person lunch, although I plan to do that on occasion.

This is some information on Panzano from my Tuscany file...but we never had time to stop there. Depending on how long you stay and what days you are there, you might find this info helpful:

Market Day: Sunday morning

Antica Macelleria Cecchini is a 250-year-old butcher shop that sounds quite interesting.

Enoteca Baldi--A wine bar, great for light lunches.

Il Vinaio--An enoteca popular with locals, has a terrace and is great for light lunches or dinners.

Between Panzano and Greve, Montagliari estate has a retaurant
http://www.montagliari.it/home_uk.html
which is acclaimed in "Lazy days out in Tuscany". We will be having lunch there this Sunday (and moving in reverese direction to you from Florence to Montalcino).

What good restaurant you have in mind in Florence? I have one "unassigned" evening there.

marchy007, thanks, I'll check it out.

We're just staying one night in Florence and having dinner at http://www.cinghialebianco.it, recommended by Monica Pileggi.

We're spending a week in Montepulciano (18-25 Sep), just taking a one-day trip to Florence for the night of the 21st & returning on the 22nd. Scheduled to do the Castello Banfi lunch and wine tour on Friday the 24th. If you are around the area, you are welcomed to join us.

Your Florence restaurant looks lovely, Budman.
We are not around in South Tuscany on 24th (we go there for two days 22,23), but we are in Florence and having dinner there same day you are. How about I make reservation in Osteria Cinghiale Bianco and look around - will be nice to meet Fodorites there. What time is your reservation? I think we can make there by 8. I can e-mail you our photo.

Enjoy your dinner at Cinghale Bianco - it was one of our favourites while we honeymooned in Italy last fall. I had the wild boar pasta and it did not disappoint!!!

Ahh, it is one of my favorites too. We had the best dinner here and on the web site it shows "our" table. Have a wonderful dinner and give all of us Fodorites a toast!

With regard to lunch at Ristorante Lamole, I would categorize it as moderately priced. It's certainly not expensive.

We had a superb lunch there for no more than 40 euros for two of us. I had one glass of house red wine which is excellent. It's from the Castello Vignamaggio down the hill (stop to buy some!). My husband and I both had a contorno (vegetable dish) and a pasta dish with no secondo. We had mineral water and my husband had an espresso.

Fabulous food, service, and view.
