Montepulciano, Pienza - No Car - What to do?

I have read many posts about needing a car in this area but I live in Italy and my dad has traveled extensively here as well and we just want to do 3 nights away from Rome and don't want to drive. Since neither of us has seen these towns, we are thinking of taking the train/bus combo from Rome.

My question, I read that there is a shuttle type service from the tourist info in Montepulciano to the wineries-- is this correct? Do we need to do an organized tour of sorts to visit the wineries? Any other suggestions or tour recommendations?

I assume you are planning to take the train from Rome to Chiusi and then the bus from there to Montepulciano. Check the schedule to make sure the bus is departing from the train station close to your arrival by train. It does depart from right in front of the train station.

I will suggest that if you have some extra time you take the bus further on from Pienza to San Quirico. The route goes through some of the most beautiful part of the area. But check the schedule- I'm not sure if the bus is frequent enough (especially depending on the day of the week) to time this right. Also, be sure to not just read the schedule- double check with the attendant at the Montepulciano bus station to make the the bus arrival/departure times are as posted. I have found that the posted schedule (right there, in the station!) is not always accurate.

Sorry, I don't have any wine tour information.
