Montenegro Towns

We will be in and around Croatia for 17 nights in May and June and we are wondering if it would be worth it to take a day trip from Dubrovnik into Kotor or Budva. Would it be better to stay the night? Are there other towns that would be a better choice! I checked out www.montenegrosmiles.com and I am so intrigued! Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

Eurotraveller, I assume you want to drive. If so, be sure to go to Kotor and then up the mountains. If you can get to Centje, the old capital, it's worth the drive. Then you can come back down around Budva and then back up the coast to Dubrovnik.

It's not an easy drive; lots of windy roads and you'll stop for cows, goats, sheep, etc. But the views from the top of the mountains are incredible.

Alternatively, Atlas does the trip for about 50 euro per person and you leave that driving to the experienced.

I normally balk at package tours, but we did the Atlas one day trip from Dubrovnik into Montenegro and it was great. It was amazing how much was packed into one day. Especially enjoyed the Presidential "palace" we visited and the lunch stop in the mountains for local wine and "ham" sandwiches.

Grasshopper, I don't think we are driving. I looked into renting a car from Venice for the 2+ weeks we will be in Croatia and the cost of renting is much higher than other parts of Europe. I think it is mostly because we are traveling into a zone the rental places consider higher risk for theft plus we would be dropping the car in Dubrovnik. Also, I saw your reply to a post on Ljubljana. Is that worth a trip? We are flying into Venice but haven't decided where to spend the first couple of nights. We have been to Venice and plan on spending a day or two around that area on our way out.

Patrick, I am with you. I generally don't go the tour route but when I have done a day tour, like into Morocco or around Rome, it was the best way to get to the best sites in the shortest amount of time.

Mark, thanks for the website info!

I think we will go the tour route on this one since you all seem to think it would be worth our time.

Given all your plans, I think I'd save Ljubljana for another trip. Frankly, after Dubrovnik, anything else is going to pale! So do it last.

I stayed in Trieste for a couple of days and really liked it. Some ruins, some castles, a great harbor. Very charming. I don't remember if you included Istria. I loved Rovinj. I hope you don't miss it.
