Mont St. Michel-hotel and parking questions?
I keep reading about various hotels on Mont St.Michel and have a few questions concerning parking overnight. If you stay on the mont at a hotel-where is your car parked and is it safe? People on past boards have said to take a small bag and leave the rest in your car-what about theft of your bigger bags? How long of a walk is it on the causeway to get over? Any help would be greatly appreciated! What town would you stay at if you cannot get accomodations on the mont?
One other quick question please? Does anyone know if Air France's internal flights fly out of CDG or Orly?(Example-Paris to Caen)
Thanks for your help-I will be having a glass of wine while I await your answers..............the stress of not having Fodors for two days was TOO much!

I stayed at Le Mere Poulard on the Mont last March. They gave us a free parking pass to park in the gated high lot, very close to the front gate. An hour after we parked, the lower lot had flooded, so be careful not to park there overnight. The walk on the causeway was nothing (maybe 200 feet) -- and the walk to the hotel was short, but the 3 flights of steep stairs to a room could tire you out if you are struggling with a lot of luggage. We took overnight bags and left all our luggage in the trunk of our car -- no problem.

Staying on the Mont overnight is amazing because there are no crowds and it is so quiet. You'll love it.

Extra Questions...........am I over my quota? Anyone have any thoughts on the amount of walking on Mont St. Michel with having had recent knee surgery?
How often does the train run from Paris to Caen and a basic price?
If my daughter and I flew over a few days earlier than my husband to Paris and we were all planning on going to Normandy together(we would pick him up in Caen?)where could mom and daugher go for a quick road trip near Paris for a few days?(I keep reading that Giverney is closed until May and that Rouen is not worth spending the night?)Thanks for any help-I promise to dedicate a crepe and a glass of wine to you over there!!!!!

I have the one I stayed at-- Le Mere Poulard:
[email protected]

I n Bayeux I stayed at Lion D'Or. It was sufficient and decently clean. I don't have that address, because I just dropped in and they had a room. I was there the last week in March last year and there were rooms available in many hotels. I would have thought that this year with the war/economy/etc. that it would have been even easier to find hotels. Maybe that's a good sign!!!

A lot of hotels (most, in my experience) do not have their own email address for reservations. They may be bookable through some reservation service, but my guess is very few will have a personal email address. I'd suggest you either FAX or make phone calls. Here are a couple listings of hotels in that area with pertinent phone numbers (and hot links to email, but only one appears to have an email address, La Mere Poularde as above):
http://www.hotels-de-bretagne.com/hotels/50/stmiche.htm

http://www.gaf.tm.fr/en/france/hotel/normandie/manche/montsaintmichel.php

The latter is a very good web site with fairly complete hotel info for all of France, and a booking service for some as you can see, but I have not used it for booking (it uses Hotelswitch) so can't comment on that service.
If you leave luggage in your car, make certain it is in your trunk where no one can see it.

As someone else pointed out, you will be given a pass to the lot higher up that does not flood. I would not worry about your car. However, those cars are sitting ducks for luggage thefts because the thieves know they belong to tourists. Personally, I would take all my luggage with me to the room. There are porters from Mere Poulard that will bring it up to the room for you.

If you are returning to, say, Paris, and could leave luggage there at your hotel, you might want to consider that.

Thanks for the tips! Does anyone have any knowledge about a hotel on Mont St Michel named; Hotel La Croix Blanche? I have seen it in a couple travel books but have not seen it mentioned on the board? It appears to be higher up the mont than the Mere Pouland(which was totally booked).Anyone?
