Monopol Hotel, Lucerne Feedback Needed

i'm looking at staying at The Monopol in May, 2018 for two nights prior to a river cruise and looking for feedback. Location-wise it looks ideal for sightseeing and the rate is attractive. Thanks in advance!

Actually, I don't like the location much. Yes, it's very close to the train station, but that's about the only advantage I see.

I admit my bias for a more traditional décor and a quieter location. We have stayed a couple of times at the Romantik Hotel Wilden Mann. The hotel puts on a great breakfast, and reviewers of the Monopol were critical of the breakfast there. The Wilden Mann is only about 600 meters farther from the train station than the Monopol and just a block from the river.

Others here will doubtless recommend the Hotels des Alpes and des Balances which are right on the riverbank, but you'd have to check their rates. If you prefer more contemporary décor, look also at the Ameron Hotel Flora.

Are you using booking.com for your research? It's a good starting point, and you can (generally) trust the reviews because you have to book through the website and stay in the hotel before you can post a review.

Hi travelchat,

We chose the Monopol for precisely those reasons - location and cost. It's also very clean and the staff very pleasant. Against that it's not got a lot of character, and at the time we were there, it was very noisy at night because the locals had decided that the best time to do road repairs was after midnight. And I agree about the breakfast.

For us, even the 600 metres to the Wilden Mann might have been too far at times for DH, but otherwise it did look very nice. Des Alpes and Des Balances are I think on the other bank so they are less convenient for the trains and boats, but more convenient for looking round the old town.
