Money - What Currency to Take?
Heading to Turkey in May from CANADA...what is the best currency to take? We are also spending 2 weeks in Greece, which we know is Euro..but Turkey?? Any help would be great.
Thanks. Are travellers cheques better than cash?? |
i would rely on ATMs with a few backup TC

Flybob:
But ATMs are expensive to use, we are charged quite a premium. |
OK, i thinkk that you have to weigh up the commission that you could pay for exchangibg currency and the TC charges that places might charge for encashment. In addition there is the safety / security factor to consider

You use the Turkish Lira in Turkey. Turkey is NOT a EU country.
Do people still use traveler's checks? How archiac. Get an ATM card. |
Even after all the ATM fees, it's still going to be significantly cheaper than changing paper money or travelers' checks either in Canada or in Turkey.

It's really unimportant what your bank might charge you to access ATMs.
You'll find it close to impossible to find anyone, anywhere in Europe, taking travellers' cheques. A nuisance in London or Paris, where you can just write a couple of days off charging from bank to bank. But in the wilds of Turkey, if you've got these useless refugees from a Museum of Ancient Currencies, you'll be reduced to begging on the streets if you haven't got some post-medieval form of currency on you. Buy a hundred Lira before you go if it comforts you to have real money in your pocket. But all European airports have working ATMs. |
