Money, Dublin then on to London

Any advice welcome on moving Euros to Pounds when going on from Dublin to London. I assume this is better than waiting to trade them in when getting back to the US. When arriving at Heathrow, is it advisable to wait to get pounds there from the ATMs? Plan on doing that for cash anyway, or do you need pounds before? I assume the ATMs are plentiful in the terminals?
Thanks, traveling in May.

Hello Basil,

Even though the UK has not embraced the single currency I think I am right in saying shops, restaurants etc. will take euros so it won't be imperative that you change them back into pounds.

In any event, the closer you are to the airport the worse rate you will get, and the more commission you will be charged.

I always go to Marks & Spencer's bureau de change for my foreign exchange. It's normally commission free and you will get a one of the best rate's in town.

Andrewmac is misinformed. Most shops and restaurants in the UK (except parts of Northern Ireland) will *not* accept euros, and if they do you will get a very bad exchange rate. So to Basil: use your euros in Ireland, change any remaining euros for pounds in London, and get pounds from an ATM at Heathrow. No problem to find ATMs at Heathrow.

Andrewmac has given you bad info. Some stores - i.e. Harrods, M&S, etc.- will take almost any currency or have in-store bureaux d'change, but with bad exchange rates. But you can't use euro at the vast majority of places. You can use euro, £ or $ at most airports - but will get your change back in the currency of the country you are in.

Just don't over-withdraw euro the last few days you are in Ireland and get £ from an ATM when you land in England.

Then if you have any euro or £ left over, you can use them at Heathrow or Gatwick for last minute shopping.

This may be old news but found this information and thought about this thread. It lists some stores in London that accept the euro.
