Money Belt and others

Any of you Fodorites have used the Eagle Creek undercover leg stash? I was debating if this item is more comfortable than a money belt. I have used my money belt for a while and I need a new one and just happen to come across with this leg stash.

Thanks

I have used a leg stash but I don't remember the brand. It is a pocket that is a perfect size for a passport and has velcro straps. It works well and certainly will conceal your valuables. You need to find the right tightness though and that can be tricky. Too tight and it becomes quickly uncomfortable. Too loose and you will soon find it around your ankle. I would sometimes use both the leg wallet and moneybelt. The leg wallet for those items where I did not really need daily access but that losing would be very serious such as my passport and (when I was on active duty) my military ID. Other items went into the money belt.

eurotravlr,
If you have a well defined calf muscle it is comfortable. The straps don't have to be tight to stay put. It is great for things like ATM withdrawals. You get the money and put it in the leg stash. A pickpocket may know where the money is but it is tough to get at it as you walk back to your hotel.

I've used that leg stash a number of times, and yes, I find it more comfortable that a waist version.

I always use a money belt, but my husband really likes this pouch which has a belt loop on one end so you put it on your belt and then tuck the pouch into your pants. It's much easier to access than a money belt.

Regarding the belt-loop pouch - husband had one on and had to remove his belt at airport security, and he didn't notice that the pouch fell to the floor until someone pointed it out to him.

He has been using the leg-stash a couple trips now, and I bought myself one for the next trip. I've been using the waistbelt, turned to the small of my back.

Hi Euro,

I used a money belt on my first trip and hated it. Too bulky and hot.

Now I use a belt loop style. Since I didn't wear belts on my Sept trip, I just used a safty pin to pin it inside the waistband. I found this to be much more comfortable and cooler than having a belt around your middle.

I only used the security belt pouch on flight days and train travel days. Other than that I leave the valuables in the hotel and just carry a travel purse.

Buon viaggio!

Dayle – I’m going to exchange the waist-style money belt I already bought for the belt-loop style. I like your idea of pinning it to the waistband. I know having one around my waist when it's hot and humid in Italy is going to drive me crazy.

I think I'm going to try the leg stash for my next trip but will also use a money belt for extra protection.

I use one all the time and love it over the other options. If you wear dress socks that are higher than crew-style, it gives an added sense of security/support and no one would even guess you have it on. I couldn't stand the feel of a waist belt, personally.

My husband used a money belt and I found it dangling out of his pant leg in St. Emilion! Thank goodness I was walking behind him!

I really like the calf style over the neck pouch. It doesn't show through my slacks and you can't see the cord around my neck.

I bought a new Eagle Creek calf stash a little over a year ago. I hated the zipper mechanism with the pulls. They were metal and jingled. I felt like a court jester walking around Sardinia.

When I got home I cut the metal zipper pulls off and replaced them with plastic zip ties that I trimmed to the right length. It's perfect now.

"It doesn't show through my slacks and you can't see the cord around my neck."

I am confused over what this means!

Indytravel which one do you like better?

suze Apr 30th, 2006 06:56 PM

SeaUrchin, he likes the leg stash best with some home modifications. Not a money belt which shows thru clothes or the neck pouch with the string around his neck.

LOL, I must be loopy today, I was trying to picture a leg stash with a cord that wrapped around his neck (and him trying to sit down at a cafe!).
