monasteries and convents
I am trying to plan a trip to Europe (Italy, France, Austria, Germany). I have read in some travel literature about staying in convents and monasteries. They are supposed to offer clean, inexpensive accomodations, many times in the hills, mountains and countrysides. After doing some of the major European cities this might be a refreshing change for a few days of our trip. Has anyone had any experience with this? Know where I could find more information? I'd love your comments and suggestions. Thanks!

My friend and I stayed in a convent out side of Rome. When we booked it we were not aware it was a convent. Imagine our surprise when we arrived and were checked in by a nun.... Even funnier it was a vietnamese nun. The picture of Baby Jesus and Mary that hung between our twin beds depicted an asian family. We did have curfew something to consider when you choose a convent. We had a wonderful experience. It was inexpensive and clean. The name was Foyer Phat Diem. I highly reccomend it!

We used the book: Bed and Blessings in Italy. Found a huge convent near the Piazza Navona for $25 pn/pp. Communicated via e-mail regarding availabilty. Good luck!
