A very boring and very overpriced place any other place on the Riviera would be preferable to me. Thanks just my opinion.

Worth a day trip from Nice or somewhere else on the Riviera. Not that much to see or do unless you're into designer shopping or gambling.

I fondly remember years ago having gone to the casino as a bit player and enjoying the beauty of the inner gaming area. It is also a fascinating people watching arena.

go there for a day trip if you always wanted to go...otherwise i'd skip it. been there once and will never bother to go back. would never stay there. nice is much, much more interesting as are many other cities and villages in the general area.

Half a day, maybe; a whole day, no, unless there's something there of special interest to you.

The one thing I regret from my 2005 trip to Provence was our day trip to Monaco.

I was amazed at how unattractive it is. I think it looks monstrous hospital. I drove through it and had no inclination to stop at all.

I stayed at the very reasonable and comfortable Hotel Helvetia.. I loved Monaco. I traveled with my 7 year old. We had a lovely time at Princess Stefanie Park, Prince Albert Pool, very relaxing and scenic. We then went on by train to Santa Margarita on the Italian Riviera and hiked from Positano to Camogli. I would love to return.

If you go to Monaco, don't forget to visit the beautiful aquarium there. It seems like that's the only attraction in Monaco for people who are not lured to gambling.

Monaco is wonderful, and a great place to spend an afternoon. The casino, famous hotels and harbor with so many incredible yachts, are not to be missed. The old town, with its gorgeous park and views, castle, shops, cathedral, etc., is nice and worth spending an hour or two. It's very different from the rest of the Riviera.

I have visited Monaco and would do so again; however, as others have suggested, I would definitely make it a day trip only.

If you think you need to skip Monaco for being touristy, think again. It is touristy, but there are plenty places in Monaco worthy of a day trip. I do agree that most of Monaco looks like a huge housing enclave. However, a visit to the Aquarium, Princess Grace Gardens, Royal Palace, Cathedral and environs is definitely, absolutely a great idea and certainly recommended. I also agree with the poster who recommends staying in Nice. A no brainer, if in/around Nice on a Monday, do not miss the Market Day at Cours Saleya. If going to Monaco from Nice, I would take the Upper Corniche car route, stop at Le Turbie (visit the interesting Roman Monument) and drive down on to Monaco (spectacular vistas as you approach). If driving, do so carefully, this is the road where Princess Grace was killed on a car accident.

The views from the Moyen Corniche are pretty good too and a lot less scary.

Thanks guys - were are going there for the Yacht Show - so that should keep us busy and probably this will be our last and only trip there. Should be interesting to people watch !

walkinaround Jul 18th, 2006 07:23 AM

jersey, i was there during the yacht show a couple of years ago. not sure if you are involved in the show or not but if seeing big yachts is your thing, the yacht club at antibes had much more impressive boats than monaco ...despite the fact that the boat show going on in the monte carlo port. we saw one huge boat pulling into monte carlo harbour and about 15 of the worlds largest private yachts in antibes.

I find this to be a wonderful place to visit. You need to park you car and get lost. There is more to Monte Carlo than the "Casino".

This is a great place to visit, as all of Europe is, in the winter.
