Modica, Ragusa or Scicli?
We want to use one of these towns as a 5 night base to explore and cannot decide which fits the bill for us. This will follow 2 weeks in Ortigia in February.
I have done quite a bit of research but find that opinions are pretty varied. I have also found that many bnbs etc are not yet open for the season. Our priorities are being able to easily get in and out of town for exploring the surrounding area as well as having an interesting array of restaurants and sights to see within the town.. We realize the possibility of poor weather and so would like to be in a town that is still lively in the gloom of winter. We have been looking at Novocento in Scicli and Sabbinirica in Ragusa Ibla. Thank you for any thoughts. |
Hi Cindy,
I only visited Scicli and stayed at Hotel Novecento, 2 nts. I did really like the city and loved the fact that it was untouristed. I was actually the only visitor in town and believe me you could tell. Lovely passegiata on the main street. I had two excellent dinners. The hotel itself is excellent. The hotel allowed me to park my car right in front and asked for my keys in case they needed to move it. That was fine. Location is not too hard to find but is in a ZTL. I originally snagged an open spot in public parking and walked to the hotel. I moved my car once they assured me I could drive in. This was in late April. Two nights in Scicli without other sightseeing was plenty. There are a few interesting things to see. I wasn't concerned about visiting the other towns so can't help there. I did visit Vendicari Nature Preserve on the way between Scicli and Ortigia. Loved it and would have liked more time there for a long hike on the beach. It was a perfect day! If you would like more detail, check my trip report from 2013 and I'll be happy to answer any questions if I can. Others here have visited more of the Baroque towns. |
