Moderate Swiss Restaurants

Getting down to the wire - any suggestions for your favorite moderate restaurants - hidden treasures- in: Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux, Interlaken, Bern, Luzern, Lugano, Basel or Zurich?

Hi bevfremont,

Hidden places in (near) Montreux are:

1. Cafe de Paris at the Hotel de l'Aigle in the village of Villeneuve (other side of Chillon).

2. Auberge de Rivaz in the village of Rivaz in the Lavuax vineyards between Lausanne and Montreux

Have fun!

You are probably looking for proper restaurants with waiters, etc

But if you want downright home cooked type Swiss foods at a price a fraction of a restaurant then look for the Migros department store cafeterias (no booze served) or competing Coop store cafeterias (booze served)

In Interlaken the top-floor Migros cafeteria has an outdoor portion with a stunning view.

Swiss flock to these places.

And in Basel, the Manor department store in Klein Basel is another one to look for.

Thanks - will try them all, if we can.

Camping grounds offer food at moderate prices too. The restaurants are open to the public.

My friends have told me again and again for the best pizza near Locarno, go to the Campingground "Bella Riva" in Gordevio (Tessin). A great place for family and friends.

Montreux:
Caveau des Vignerons, 30, rue Industrielle (in the old town, up the hill) - very atmospheric (you sit in a vaulted cave or, in summer, on a terrace) with excellent fondues (meat, seafood (!!!), cheese) at moderate prices.

Zürich:
Alpenrose, traditional alpine atmosphere, but VERY trendy among locals, regional food (e.g. fish from Lake Zürich), also moderately priced.

Reithalle, another trendy location in a former riding hall, serving crossover and eclectic cuisine from around the world. Student-friendly prices, especially for lunch.

Bern:
Kornhauscafé (not KornhausKELLER, which is more expensive) offering breakfast, lunch, dinner. Light, modern cuisine. Many vegetarian dishes. Inexpensive.

I thought 'moderate Swiss restaurant' was an oxymoron :-)
