So I don't forget...

As it turns out, the hostel is 3 hostels, but how it works is that Fourcy is the biggest and main one. So most people end up there by default. I think the other two are overflow.

Love location, thanks Fuzzbucket. Marais is nice, plus it's a very short walk to St. Paul metro station.

Definitely kid friendly. No booze, as Fuzzbucket mentioned in previous thread. Lots of high school groups and teachers.

A few oddities...

Toilet is in hall but shower and sink in room. But as one might expect, small building, so toilet is pretty close whatever room you are in.

Elevator, but if it breaks down, I'm SOL. The only staircase I saw was narrow and spiral, the kind I fall down a lot.

Rooms are cozy. By cozy I mean small. By small I mean adorable tiny cave. Timbered ceilings. Built in beds, and I'm sure that's because normal bunks would take up too much space. On plus side, I think maximum room size is 4 people. And it's one of the things I like about this place.

No lockers in rooms and I don't think I seen that before. Lockers are coin operated in luggage room.

Bed is made when you walk in. House keeping is 12-3 and I think that was a strong hint to not hang out in room at that time (probably because it's tough to clean around a person in these rooms.

Dinner 12 euro. Pay reception. Decent food, menu varies throughout week, like school cafeteria.

Long ago I took university groups to the hostels -stayed in Fourcy-sounds about the same- a great great deal and a great great location -really not far from Notre-Dame. Glad to hear it is still going well.

Any good public markets for food in Paris? Or street food. I cannot live on pastries alone...or at least I shouldn't!

Bastillle market before 12 PM on Thurs and Sun.
Head for the "good" crêpe stand on the far side near McDonald's - 3 cooks, loads of choices and lots of cookies, caramel sauce etc laid out in front.
Or "Paella Bob" or any other ethnic food you like.
You can also buy half a roasted chicken or even quarters at most stands.
Quiches are always good.
A "saucisson/oignon/moutard" baguette sandwich is excellent from the "other" crêpe stand in the middle aisle.

"Marché Bastille" will show you the place on Google maps. "Bastille market" gets you a convenience store. There's another I recall, I thought closer to you, but I haven't been able to find it.

I found it, on rue de Rivoli, Place Baudoyer, Go toward Metro St-Paul from the hostel, but turn left instead of right onto Rivoli, about 3 blocks. At the 4th arrondissement Mairie building.

I believe it's this one he means, Marché Bastille, Boulevard Richard Lenoir, 75011. Less than a block north of Bastille.

Yes Bastille market is on Lenoir on thursday at least - I am often found biking there on thursday mornings.

The market at Place Baudoyer is very small and opens in the afternoon. Not much at all in the way of "street food". Go to the Bastille market, instead. It isn't far away from MIJE.

Marche Aligre doesn't have any street food, either. Lots of little trendy - and not very budget friendly - little restaurants all around there, though.

You can't miss the Bastille market - it's right where the traffic circle is - the one with the giant column in the middle - and the Paris Opera House right behind it.

Beds start at 35/night

And I knew there was a reason I had packed my camp towel- the camp towel I just shipped home! MIJE has no towels. Is there somewhere convenient in the neighborhood to buy one? Or somewhere in another area would be fine- will probably venture out today.

Why "instead"? If she has time why not see all 3 markets. I like the setting of Place Baudoyer.

And mmeperdu, is place baudoyer open every day? Think I'll go wandering today if I don't do museums.

I had to look it up: Wednesday, 12.30pm-8.30pm; Saturday, 7am-3pm.

Go to Monoprix to the housewares department (1st floor in the back) and get one of those chamois/microfibre cloths, which work very well.
Or go to Bastille market - the people who sell "assorted kitchen items" often have cheap towels, around 1 EU.
