I can see why folks who have an ephemeral quick look at Octoberfest may be disappointed and leave quickly - but if you look at the locals all singing en mass to the oompah bands and how much fun they are having - not nearly everyone is falling down drunk - there are folks of all ages - from grannies to teens - whole families and whole corporate offices here - a real treat for me - to see the frauleins unfathomably carrying a dozen of more full heavy glass mubs of beer around without spilling a drop
to take the famous fresh pretzels and radishes - the smell of hazlenuts roasting - ah yes the revelry - the spirit of life... and it is all so so German.

Pal, why MUST you put down people who don't share your views, calling them "so jaded" to enjoy Oktoberfest or that their opinion is based on ephemera. You launched a similar uncalled for attack on Swandav because she didn't agree with your view on Interlaken. You seem to believe there's something wrong with anyone who doesn't march to YOUR beat.
In the case of Oktoberfest, we don't like crowds. I don't like parades - I spent too much time in my youth parading around in a marching band and now parades just don't appeal to me. I don't like large glasses of beer. We don't like oom-pah-pah music for more than five minutes.
Why can't you simply accept that some people don't like the same things you do and there is NOTHING wrong with that? The OP asked for our opinions of Oktoberfest and those who have been there gave them. Some, like you, liked it. Others, like us, didn't. End of story.

I do and sorry you are so offended - but after poster after poster said Octoberfest was a sham I strive to point out why someone could enjoy it - in fact most folks enjoy it I have talked to but these are not veteran traveleres who yes may become jaded - this is my opinion and I will state it. You state yours and I could say why do you think I am so easily amused, etc. I don't take you to task for stating your opinion and yes I believe that some folks, not necessarily you or any of the FodorGarchs here, take a quick look and get out, not discovering things they could enjoy if they took a better look.
The cascade of negative reviews here needed some opposite views as it became like piling on in football - one striving to me more negative than the other (see Aduchamp's post for example)
And to avoid pricey hotels day trip in to Octoberfest as I have done (from Garmisch - but could be from any place within an hour or so of train - Octoberfest Grounds - the Theiresen Weiss (sp?) is just a short walk from the main train station (and a short walk from an S-Bahn station a stop west of the main station.

I didn't see ONE poster who called it a "sham" - who specifically said that. Some people said it was over-rated. That is NOT the same thing as calling it a sham. And even some of those who didn't like it said there are perfectly good reasons reasons why others might enjoy it. YOU, on the the other hand, said why you enjoyed and then proceeded to make condescending remarks about those who didn't rave about it.
You are within your rights to state your opinion about why YOU like it but you are inaccurate and rude in your snap and denigrating judgments of those who didn't care for it. Try showing some respect for people who don't agree with you rather than trying to cram them into some belitting box ("jaded" "Fodorgarchs" "ephemeral") to deliberately undermine their viewpoints.

I have been to Oktoberfest several times and I do not drink beer. It is fun just to see the sights. I love seeing the Bavarian outfits and some of the rides are unique. I go in the morning before the rowdy bunch joins the fun. Actually, I would go just to get the delicious chocolate dipped strawberries on a stick if I were already in the area. And yes, I can get dipped strawberries at home, but they just seem to taste better there-even better than the $7.50 one I got from Godiva.
