Minimum Sight-Seeing Layover in Munich
 

What is the minimal amount of time one should consider having for sight-seeing in Munich on a layover?

We are traveling to Gdansk, Poland and considering a 3:15 layover of a 7 hour layover.

Which would be better, seeing as both start at 8am?

Others will be much more knowlegeable than I, but train schedule at www.bahn.de would indicate that it takes about 40 minutes to get from the airport to downtown, so I would have to guess a 7 hour lauover would be necessary...

Thanks, I think we'll do the 7 hour layover in Munich on the way to Gdansk and the 7 hour layover in Paris on the way back from Krakow. Now to get detailed arrangements for the off-the-beaten-path lunch spots and train travel.

Yes, the 7 hour layover will allow you to go into Munich itself.

For travel into Munich - just take the S-Bahn. Follow the signs in the airport to the S-bahn station - it is easy to find. You buy your tickets from a machine on the platform. Only lines S1 and S8 serve the airport and both go into the city center - take which ever one comes first as both take about the same amount of time to get into Munich.

You will only end up with a few hours in Munich itself since you will spend about 90 minutes travelling to and from Munich and should probably plan to be back to the airport 90 before your flight to be on the safe side. If you arrive at MUC at 8am, you should be in Munich by 9:30.

If you haven't been to Munich before, I would go to Marienplatz and check out the Altstadt - see the Nues Rathaus, maybe climb the tower at Alte St. Peter Church, tour the Residenz or something like that, then have lunch and head back to the airport.

That sounds great. I was there but 10 years ago. Any great advice like this for Paris on the way back?

I changed my layover to 12 hours, so we can really enjoy what I remember more than 10 years ago. If I could get the train to Nahburg and back to show my husband where I studied, I'll take it.

Not only does it take 40 minutes to get from and to the airport, but we were surprised that we had to wait for the 'next" train for almost 20 minutes.
Also, it took a while to get from the Metro to the
departure area for our flight.

I agree that 7 hours is better. I figure an hour each way, counting the wait time for the train. Go to Marienplatz and check out that area. The Viktualien Markt and the Hoffbrau Haus are both very close to Marientplatz. Either of them are a good place to grab lunch and people-watch. There is also a lot of shopping in the area.
