Minho to Marvao
Hello all,
Thanks so much for everyones info on Portugal. Our honeymoon to Portugal in July is shaping up with time in Cascais, Obidos, Coimbra and the Minho area.Yet we have some questions. We will be up in the Minho staying in Viano de Castello for four days and want to head south and east to Marvao for two or three days. Any idea how long it will take? Should we stay overnight along the way? Where if that is the case? Also, has any one stayed in Castelo de Vide or is Marvao better?
Thanks for any ideas.
Marilyn

Marilyn, It is a long drive to Marvao
from Viano. Frankly, I would save Coimbra for your way south and use it as your intermediate point and then to
Marvao on the road across the middle
near Tomar. Castelo de Vide is more of
a town but the Pousada at Marvao is
special--they are only :15 apart. I would stay in Marvao---also decent food
at the Pousada---I have stayed there twice and find it appealing.

We just stayed 2 nights in the Hotel Garcia D'Orta in Castelo de Vide. It is a small to medium sized hotel, with clean and comfortable, small rooms. The town is small, nice, with good old sites. We took a side trip from there to the Roman bridge and Marvao. Write for more info.

Hi Bob,
Thank you, thank you for all your advice. As you can see from my post, we are thinking of going to Marvao in leiu of Belmonte etc. Leaving Coimbra for our way south could be a good idea. Yet we have already made reservations. We are splurging for one night to stay at the Pousada in Obidos and made reservations two days later for the Pousada in Viana de Castelo thinking we would stay in Coimbra on the way north. Perhaps we could move the dates up. How long would it take to get from Obidos to Viana de Castelo? Or if we can not change our reservations any other town to stay at on our way south to Marvao? Any other ideas are welcomed. Thanks
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,

Have celebrated my honeymoon myself in Portugal. Took the same route (Cascais, Obidos, Castelo de Vide and Marvao). Have been to Marvao 3 times - my absolut favorit spot in Portugal. You must simply stay in Marvao and at the pousada. Have also tried the Pensoa d. Dinis in Marvao - a very cosy inn and not so expensive as the pousado. In Obidos you can also try Estalagem do Convento. Less expensive as the pousado - but a very romantic place. Have stayed twice in this place. Book the suite - and mention your honeymoon - and they will give you a bottle of champagne. Yoy man also want to stay at the pousada in Evora on the way from Marvao to Lisboa. Have stayed there twice. One of the best in Portugal and best food.
Best of luck - Ebbe

Hi Bob and Ebbe,
Thanks for your advice. We have booked all our hotels except for Coimbra. We will be staying in Marvao at the pousada for two nights. Looking forward to it. Also we will stay at the pousadas in Obidos ( in the round room!) and in Viano de Castello. With all the wedding plans upon us I am looking forward with delight to our trip.
Thanks again for all your ideas.
Marilyn
