Millau Viaduct
Is driving it one direction or the other any more scenic? I will no be that far away and do plan to make the journey. Looking at the map, I could do it from either direction.
Thanks... |
Hi G,
You could drive across, turn around and go back and see both views of the valley. It's only a couple of km. ((I)) |
Heading towards the Med gives a better view of the viaduct itself. The valley is about the same, whichever direction would be seen.
Again, on the route towards the Med you will find a pull-out spot before you arrive to the viaduct, so you can take a better view. It's spectacular. Blackduff |
We did this in 2005.
Coming from the north is more scenic. You can see it coming whereas from the south, you round a bend and its right in front of you. Have your camera ready as it goes by fast. |
Thanks for the quick replies. Sounds good. I will be staying in Cabezac (east of Carcassonne) and about 1hr 45 min per via Michelin..think I will do the west to east as you have suggested and then down to the St. Guilhem le Desert area and who knows from there, for a day trip...

It is more scenic seen from below. There is a tourist center at the bottom of the bridge. But obviously, you will want to drive over it, too.
|
There is an article in the July issue of "France" magazine describing the bridge, the town, how to get the views, history of the area, etc.
|
Once you're on it it's surprisingly unexciting, but the approaches - especially the northern one - are most cool.

And to get your amazement level even further revved up... (plagiarizing myself from an earlier post)...
...go to http://www.leviaducdemillau.com/accu...N/rub/23.html# and click on "Portfolio" and watch! Truly amazing! First posted on http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34650446 Best wishes, Rex |
Thanks for all the replies. I am definitely going to make the drive!!

Hi
The best solution is to cross Millau South to North to get a good view of the bridge from the valley, then cross the bridge North to South to get good views and the visitor centre. The bridge is 300+m (1,000 ft) from valley floor to the highest point. Higher than Denmark ? A few photos of the bridge : http://www.the-languedoc-page.com/ph...gallery-26.htm http://www.the-languedoc-page.com/ph...gallery-12.htm Peter |
Peter,
Thanks for the great pictures...I will do as you say for viewing it. Your pictures do not show much traffic on it..is that normal?? I will be there about 9/20.... Joan |
