Milan, Verona and Padua in 4 days

Arriving in Milan on Thursday Aug 28 at 2pm, flying out of Milan on Monday Sept. 1st. What would be the best way to see these 3 cities? We are planning on staying in Milan for all 4 nights and taking the train to Padua and Verona for a one day trip. Do we need more than one day for both towns? Thank you for your help.

Is it correct to assume you have been to Venice and that you are going to Padua especially for the Scrovegni Chapel? If that is not of special interest, then I personally think Padua is kind of a trek from Milan, slightly over two hours train time each way, so over four hours of travel. Is it worth it?
It is doable though. You could get an early train, say 7 or 8 am, get to Padua by 9 or 10, walk to the chapel by 9:30 or 10:30, tour the chapel, lunch, catch the train back to Verona by mid afternoon, tour a few hours, have dinner and get back to Milan very late.

You might consider Vicenza instead. The city is lovely and Teatro Olympico is stunning, as are all the Palladian buildings.

If you go to Padua, be sure to get tickets ahead for the Scrovegni Chapel. Otherwise, you may not get in.

Sassafras,
Thank you for the tip on Vicenza. Yes we have been to Venice but I thought that if I could get both towns visited in one day, why not. Your schedule is exactly what I have planned but I have not bought tkts yet. Thanks again for your reply.

Agree with Sassafras - as long as you have what you want to see plotted out in general and have your Scrovegni tickets in advance this should be great. Hopefully you'll be able to go back and spend more time there - I know I want to!

I took a 7am train from Milano to Padova for a day trip (stayed in Verona for a different part of that trip) and it's tiring but totally doable. I essentially went to the Basilica and Scrovegni, walked around, ate, did a little shopping for a birthday present and thoroughly enjoyed Padova.

Have a great trip!

The cities aren't that small so there's a lot of walking around. If I had to choose between Padua and Verona, it would be Verona hands down. Don't do both on the same day. It's a bit of an overkill. Instead, choose one and leisure through it.

The railway station in Verona is a bit distant from the center. You can take a taxi or, cheaper, buy tickets from the station tabacconist and board one of the frequent urban buses leaving for the Arena area in front of the station. Do not try to walk to the center as you would cluelessly spend time and energies.

Having been to Verona several times for the operas and leaving for them again at the end of the week I suggest you look at Googlemaps for Verona. It is not, IMO, that far a walk from the Porto Nuova rail station to the center of the city. I've done it more than once and if you like walking it is a pretty easy walk, too. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot to see between the two so a taxi might be a better option. Forget the bus because waiting for one will take even longer.

I would have specific sites in Verona in mind before you go there. You could easily spend a couple of days there if you wanted to so please be aware.

What do you want to do in Milan? It's a huge city and not particularly dense tourist site wise. The duomo is outstanding and there are certainly other things to see but I would suggest you overnight in Verona for two of the nights. Verona and Padua in one day plus four hours on the train means you will see very little of two beautiful cities. I spent a week in Padua and didn't get bored (I did do day trips many of the days) and I've been to Verona twice, once on a day trip (from Padua, which is very close) and once for 4 days. I think they both have a lot to offer, the vast majority of which you will miss with your plan.

Unless there is a reason you need to spend all four nights in Milan I would take the train to Verona on that first afternoon and spend Thurs, Fri and Sat nights in Verona. One day do a full day trip to Padua. That really only gives you one day plus the evenings in Verona which is a minimum I think. Then early Sunday take the train to Milan and spend the rest of the day and night there.

Ducinaltum,
Exactly the trip I was planning on taking. Early train to Padua and late train back to Milan.

Kleeblatt -Thank you and I will take your advice about doing each town on a separate day.

Asps & Dukey 1 - Thanks for the info about the taxi into Verona, no sense wasting time when I can get on with what we came to do.

Isabel - Thank you for the advice about going to Verona on Thursday. I had thought of doing that because I knew it would save us time on Friday. So we will probably spend Thurs and Fri nights in Verona and then head back to Milan on Sat evening.
