Milan to Venice
I am planning a trip to Venice, florence and Rome. I am finding more options for cheaper and non-stop flights to Milan rather than Venice (flying into) - planning to fly out of Rome. Most of the flights are arriving in Milan around 9ish in the morning (from USA).
Is it a better option to fly to Milan and then take the train ride to Venice? This is my first trip and not sure how frequent the train rides are. Hope I am clear enough! Thanks. |
You can expect virtually hourly departures from Milano Centrale, the main train station in Milan for Venice. The trip takes about 2.5 hours and costs €25-€35 depending on type of train and class of seat.
However, first you must travel approximately one hour from Malpensa Airport to Milano Centrale by bus. The bus costs €7. Plus there will be waiting time to make the connections. So, in deciding that non-stop to MIlan is preferable costwise to one-stop to Venice, be sure to include €35-€45 ($45-$60) more for train/bus and about 5 hours more time from landing at Malpensa to arriving in Venice, and the work of hauling your luggage on and off a bus and train and so forth. |

Unless the savings is very substantial I would fly directly into Venice.
From the Milan airport you need to take a bus into the city to the Central Station and then get a train to Venice. I believe the bus takes about an hour and the trains, although frequent, takes about 2.5 hours at best. Being jetlagged after an overnight flight this would be too much to do before you even get to the vaporetto to find your hotel. |
Well, but, if the connection requires you to sit for 5 hours in the Milan airport before boarding the flight to Venice (many do), I say take the train. |
sure, cap, all must be compared and prioritized by the OP's needs.

I just didn't want the OP tho think that it would be an insignificant amount of money or time to take the train.

Milan MXP to Venice >>> http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=35176145 Here's a current thread that discusses the topic of getting from one of Malpensa Airport (Milan) via train to Venice. As to whether flying into Milan is a better option vs. into Venice ..... as other posters have outlined, you need to evaluate the entire cost (train travel) and the time factor. |
Thanks to you all. your explanation is very useful.
