Milan to Cinque Terre
Message: I am travelling to Italy in early October and am wondering if anybody would have information on how to get from Milan (Malpensa airport) to Cinque Terre. Is there a train connection? Appreciate your suggestions.

Hi Sandd

We're doing the same thing. Go to www.trenitalia and type in Milano and La Spezia Centrale or the name of the town where you are staying. You should get the train schedule.

Buon viaggio

Hi Sand,
I've taken the Train IC 659 Mameli dep. from Milan Central Train station
at 9.10 a.m. arr.
at Sestri Levante at 11.36 a.m.
Train Regional 11341 dep. from Sestri Levante station at 11.42 a.m. arr. at
Corniglia at 12.24.(or the village you prefer). For any help contact catherina at c.unger.tiscalinet.it
^
sandd:

I'll give you the minutia as I've twice traveled between MXP and LaSpezia.

First you have to get from the airport (MXP) into city of Milan. You have several choices of transport to Stazione Centrale (1) taxi; (2) Malpensa Express --- train departs from airport terminal into Cadorna Nord station in Milan; and (3) Malpensa Shuttle Bus --- departs outside terminal & goes directly to Stazione Centrale. Due to budget restraints, I've not taken taxi. If there's several of you traveling this may be a viable option. Otherwise, you'll want to go via the shuttle bus. Think bus cost is about 15,000 lire.

Once you've gotten to main train station in Milan (Stazion Centrale), you have several train runs by which to proceed on to the Cinque Terre. Again, my suggestion comes from my personal preference --- opt for one of the InterCity (IC) trains. If you flight arrives real early & you're able to get into Milan for the 9:10 am train which 'run' describes, that'd be good. BUT if you're not getting in until later, then consider going on the 13:10 (1:10 pm) from Milan to Monterosso 15:57 (4:12 pm) OR even, waiting until afternoon departure at 16:10 (4:10 pm), Milan to Monterosso 19:03 (7:03 pm). If you do wait until the later departure, you can leave your luggage at train station ('Deposito Baglio'), stretch you legs & see a site or two (Duomo, Castello Sforesco, LaScala, Galleria) in Milan and then arrive @ the CT for dinner.

Reason that I suggest the InterCity runs is that you don't have to change trains until you get to either Monterosso or LaSpezia (if you're not actually staying in Monterosso). And the route taken on the IC is prettier as it heads west and then cuts down the coastline.
To escape the run to downtown Milano, there is a nonstop bus from Malpensa to Genoa Central Train Station. Took it a few years ago and since I was whacko from the flight anyway, the +/- two hour trip was ok. In fact there was only one other person on the bus. Trains south from Genoa to CT run often and its less than an hour.

-
DALE:

Glad to hear that. Do you remember what busline it was that runs between MXP & Genoa? Next time I go to visit my friend in Spezia, I'd like to try that route.

ROBIN:
I can only remember that it was a small bus seating about thirty, but I'm sure that anyone in Malpensa can direct you to the ticket booth. Ciao. DALE

Robin - the bus company is VOLPI.

Steve

Thanks Steve !

Tried to look up bus company if they had a schedule online. Was able to find them listed thru the MXP website:
http://www.sea-aeroportimilano.it/en...llegamenti.htm

And for anyone else who may be interested in this option,
Daily bus service connects Piazza della Vittoria with the airports of Nice and Milan-Malpensa. For information, contact Volpi Buses (located in the above piazza).
Tel 010586511 or 010581594
Cost 30,000 lire
Departs from Terminal 1 --- Malpensa Airport
Buy ticket Airport 2000
