Gucci is half price from the US. Many other Italian made clothes and shoes are the same but....KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!
Research shop at home first!
Before I go to outler shop, I always visit the DolceVita website. Great articles about shopping in every area of Italy, where things are and basic tourist and sights/sites items.
www.dolcevita.com

I wanted to add that January and July are when the "sales" are on in Italy. They are goverment regulated, so it's only twice a year. Everyone does it. I know that Gucci has 50% off their purses this month.
ALSO: Bring your passport with you, so you can get a 20% refund on the tax you paid on clothing and gifts. Ask about it in any shop. They all know what to do.
Have fun!
Melissa

thank you Melissa!

i am assuming the tax credit in italy works in a way that is simular to france...

..you get a form at the time you make the purchase and before boarding at airport go to the tax refund window..??

melissa do you know what the minimum purchase amount is to 'qualify'?

Melissa Jan 15th, 2003 04:54 AM

Hi Karin,
Yes, that is exactly how it works. Last I knew it was around 125 Euro per shop. I could be wrong though, it's been a while since I used it.
If anyone else knows please put it here.
Ciao, Melissa
PS: When are you coming to Milan?

Nick Jan 15th, 2003 06:48 AM

Alice,
You seem to know your shoe outlet stores - so would you know any furniture outlet stores. I was told near Udine, but cannot find anything useful on the net. Thanks

If you have a substantial investment in VAT rebates make sure you get to the airport VERY early. We waited in the VAT line at Malpensa for an hour and then had to give up.

Nick:

I know about outlets in Milano because I live in Milano. I have no idea about Udine, though. If you are looking for discounted furniture in Milano check out the outlet list at http://www.vamosacliccar.it/ milano/negozi_spaccio.htm
