Milan-Roma-Milan (via Fast Train)
Hello there,
We are planning to have a sidetrip in Rome around August. Can someone send me a link for the fast train schedule for Milan-Rome-Milan? I would also appreciate a link for a day tour in Rome. Thank you in advance. |
Www.trenitalia.com, I've posted advice on using it at www.seat61.com/Italy-trains.

Regarding a tour of Rome, the sites are too big and varied to be lumped into a single day tour, so you need to decide which sites you prefer to see.
1. Ancient Rome = Colosseum & Forum area. A 3hr guided tour of that area can help bring the history alive. I've used icon tours - good balance of info and cost. 2. Central historic district, including many fountains, squares, markets, historic buildings, + many, many minor and major churches. No tour required, just a good map and good walking shoes. 3. Vatican (Museum + Sistine Chapel), St. Peter's. Also no tour required, but you need to budget 1/2 at a miniumum to see both the museums/Sistine + St. Peter's. If you're only interested in St. Peter's then a few hrs is enough. These 3 areas are easy to get to by bus or taxi, but you can't instantly travel from one place to another. Getting around takes time. Also factor in time just for people watching, gelato eating, etc. For a 1 day visit you don't have time to vist 1, 2, and 3. Pick 1&2 or 2&3 and it'll be a very full day. Train from Milan to Rome takes 3.5 hrs. |

Make more time for Roma if you can far prettier than Milano more to do. Recently the Intercontinental $180/nt bidding priceline.com For me right at the Spanish Steps. ostia-antica.org intact Roman port town awesome better than Pompeii if time. |
Trenitalia is slow loading summer schedules (start June 12) so if there aren't but a few trains listed for your dates, then they haven't been loaded yet. Hopefully, in the next week or two they will finish loading them.

Some trains between Milan and Rome are only 3 hours, but that's still 6 hours on trains in one day. And you may not be in the mood to move around Rome very quickly if it's hot as Hades which it could be in August.
