milan hotel

can anyone recommend a reasonable well situated hotel in milan?

Well-situated to what, precisely? Trains and metro? Sightseeing? Nightlife? Shopping?

The more detailed your query the more help we can offer. And a specific price point will be helpful, taking into account that Milan's a bit more expensive than other areas in Italy due to the large number of business travellers.

Okay, I looked at your other posts and it looks like you're looking for a single night's lodging for your family of 5, en route from Malpensa to Locarno.

Are you sure you want to spend a night in Milan? Because Malpensa is already about a third of the way between Milan and Locarno, so travel directly from Malpensa to Locarno might be an option unless you very much want to visit Milan.

Thank you. Too late to change the plan as our rail travel is now organised from milan central....booked thro the german rail service bahn who are excellent and much cheaper than the swiss rail service.
Basically we arrive friday at about 6. On friday evening we will walk about and have a meal so hotel in an atmospheric part of town would be good. Noyhing too highbrow on saturday but a stroll round the shops and some sightseeing before heading for milan centrral at 1600 hours.

We enjoyed Hotel Charly twice, one night each at the bookends of our Italy trip in May '06 - certainly walking distance to Milano Centrale, and a nice light breakfast each morning. We stayed in both the main hotel & the annex in the neighboring property. I don't know about multiple sleeping accomodations, however, we were in a matrimoniale.

btw, in the train station neighborhood, most shops are shuttered at night (hope you like graffiti), which can be somewhat stiffling to if you've been used to other destinations in No. Italy... but it's a very active residential neighborhood during the day/evening.

Another hotel in the immediate vicinity of Milano Central that I can recommend is Hotel Madison (I stayed there in September, single female). As ronin points out the neighborhood is not much for sightseeing, and the area's a bit run down, but the hotel is convenient and the location good for transit.

Thanks for your comments. i think we will go for a more "up market" area rather than opt for the convenience of being near the station

I'd rather think you would need 2 rooms if it's for 5 people.

Consider the Navigli neighborhood (Porta Genova if you're looking for hotels at venere.com). What's left of the old canals that initially made Milan an industrial and trade powerhouse, this zone now features pedestrian walks along the canals, with bridges arching over them and literally bajillions of restaurants and bars along the way. Lots of people out strolling (not all that characteristic of Milan in this sense), and lots of lights strung up for Christmas (as I gather you'll be there during the holidays, right?).

Our family of 4 stayed at the Hotel dei Cavalieri in June and it worked very well. The windows were well-insulated so our rooms were very quiet. We got 2 rooms, but they were actually kind of connected (you could close one outer door and then turn left or right into each room with its own door and bathroom. The room the boys stayed in was huge and could easily have slept 3 kids, even teens.

The hotel is modern and the breakfast and location very good...it seemed a to be a little bit more of a business hotel than some places, but that really made no difference to us. It was good, but not super special, however, the rate was excellent. I would stay there again.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you any questions. Have fun.
