Milan-Como.Dec-31.help

As part of a 15-day trip to Italy, my husband and I are including Milan-Como area, in part for a special celebration. Our plan is:
Dec-30 > Rome/Milan by AM-train and go straight to Como.
Dec-31 > Como (it's my husband's birthday) and also New Year's eve -- what's there to do that would be different to the traditional touristy thing?
Jan-01 > Como or Milan area
Jan-02 > Depart Milan for Tuscany (Parma, Modena, Bologna, Florence)

Cont'd ...
My question is: Which of these areas in Italy is the best choice to spend Dec-31 with my husband for his 50th birthday?
a) Rome
b) Positano
c) Como

Rosihar, what is it that you and your husand would like to do on New Years/and his birthday.

Imagine Como will be bitting cold.

Haven't been to any of the three over New Year's, but common sense would dictate that your options would be greatest in Rome, because it's such a large, cosmopolitan city. I can't imagine that much is happening on New Year's Eve in Positano.
I'd revise the schedule and spend Dec. 30-Jan. 2 in Rome.

I agree with previous posters. Como or any of the lakes would not be my choice for New Year's Eve. Too cold, too empty/quiet. I'd also not choose Cinque Terre, Portofino or the Amalfitano as they are more oriented to the summer tourist season.

If you don't want to be in a big city (Rome, Milan), I'd consider Perugia, Siena, Cortona or even Florence which has a mid-sized city feel.
