@neckervd. Thanks for the train fares and train journey times.
@NYC. Thanks for the train info.

All this info has been very helpful. So after reviewing the time spent on trains vs. the cost of using MXP, the # of days we are in Italy, I've decided that it would be best if we flew into Rome and spent 5 days there and then spent the rest of our time at a coastal town. Then back to Rome to fly back to NY. Trying to do Rome, Como area and Milan in our time frame is too much. I don't want to be spending a lot of time traveling to the various cities.

Any suggestions on hotels in Rome? Any suggestions on which area in Rome to stay? And any suggestions for a coastal town? Hotels in that coastal town? My brother spent a few days in Sorrento and really liked it.

Thanks!

What's your hotel budget?

Sorrento is about 4 hours away from Rome. And if you went to Sorrento, how could you resist seeing Positano, Amalfi, Capri, Pompeii, Naples. That's another 5-7 days right there.

Sperlonga is about an hour south of Rome, and Santa Marinella is about an hour north of Rome. Both have train service. But I can't just sit/stroll on a beach (I live in a beach town), so I'd want a car if I was staying in either place.

How about just making some day trips from Rome? Or heading into Umbria for a couple of days?

Sperlonga is just more interesting than Santa Marinella, so I would give the edge to that if you don't go to Sorrento.

However, while I am no huge fan of Sorrento myself, it does have much more range when it comes to good hotels with nice amenities plus, if you get bored with sunbathing, or if you get some rain, then you can easily find a zillion things to do without renting a car.

It is not all that much longer to get to Sorrento then it would be to get to Sperlonga. You take the fast train to Naples, and then you can take a commuter train -- or more romantically, a ferry -- to Sorrento.

Come to think of it, I believe there is still a direct bus from Rome to Sorrento, but I am not sure how convenient it is in terms of schedule or departure point.
