HELP WITH ROUTING
We have rented a car in Munich on a Saturday morning. We will drive to Salzburg (do salt mines and check out sound of music sites) ?do organized tour or on our own. Stay the night here or drive to Garmisch-Partenkirchen? Drive early next morning to Mitenwald, Garmish-Partenkirchen (stay here? possibly Gasthaus Fraundorfer), to Ettal to Oberammagau to Linderhoff to Neuschwanstein and then back to Munich airport by 6:30 pm Any suggestions on best way to break up the trip to maximize our time would be greatly appreciated. THanks

You don't say how many days you have. As far as tours in Salzburg, I can't help, but I would spend the night there before driving to Garmisch area. When we did the drive it took about 4 hours, but we hit some road construction in Germany and it really slowed us down.
We stayed in Oberammagau and visited both Linderhoff and Neuschwanstein. It was a great central location and not a city like Garmisch-Partenkirchen. If you're into Pensions try this place.

Very friendly owners who speak excellant English. Great price too.

So you are planning to start in Garmisch and drive over Ettal, Oberammergau, Linderhof and Neuschwanstein to Munich Airport to get your flight at 6.30 pm? Better start in GP at midnight and rent a Porsche, so you could possibly make it!

Sorry I didn't put in how many days. We will arrive Munich Friday May 9 mid afternoon. Leave Munich 8:00 Saturday morning to go to Salzburg. Spend day in Salzburg seeing Sound of Music sites and salt mines and whatever else we have time for. On Sunday, go to the area around Garmisch-Partenkirchen, stay in G-P. Early Monday head to castles near Fussen and then get to the airport by 6:30 pm for our 8:45 pm flight to Paris. Would this be the best direction to travel or would we be better to reverse it? Thanks

Sounds like you have a lot planned in a short time.
Go to viamichelin.com and look at the driving time from Salzburg to Garmish and from Salzburg to Fussen.
I would suggest that you drive straight through to Fussen from Salzburg. See the castles early (they open at 9, but I don't know when the fist English tour is.
Then go to Oberammergau and Ettal in the afternoon on your way to Munich. Cut out Garmish and possibly Linderhof if you are short of time.
Sound of Music is only part of the charm of Salzburg. Yu have said one of your kids wants to do that tour so you may want to just hit a couple of highlights. http://www2.salzburg.info/ Salzburg Tourist Info
