Happy New Year! Got a quick trip to Milan planned. Never been. Is it a fun place? Should we get right out of there? To the Lakes? South? Hotels? Thanks for your suggestions.

You didn't say what time of year you will be in Milan or what your major interests are. What is fun to you? You always can go see the city center area of the Duomo (an elevator can take you to the top for the best views of the city), the Galleria and La Scala. Beginning now, LaScala theater is closed for restoration, although the adjacent museum remains open. Opera is moving to the suburbs for the time being. The Sforza Castle is close to this Duomo-Galleria-LaScala axis and is well worth a visit. The Last Supper can be visited; best to get a ticket in advance for an entry time. There are some wonderful museums in Milan, depending upon your interests. There is the fashion/shopping scene. Restaurants/clubs, etc. I would avoid Milan in summer and, above all, in August. Hotels depend on how much you want to spend. How many stars are you looking for? After leaving Milan, how much time do you have? And again, what time of year? In warm weather, the lakes. In snow, the Dolomites. Only 1 1/2 hours east via train is Verona, a gem. Another 1 1/2 hours takes you into Venice.

A ggod hotel choice is the Hotel Dira Grande. My spouse and I were there this past Thanksgiving for three days.

While in Milan my boyfriend and I stayed at the Hotel Spadari al Duomo. It is a little more towards the expensive side (200+/- euro for double), but was well worth it. It is located about 1 block from the Duomo and shopping area and walking distance from the Sforza Castle. The decor is very art-deco, the service was very good, and the breakfast buffet plentifull. I would definetely stay there again. Enjoy your trip!
