Might there be a "Hermes Factory Outlet" in France?

Do they even MAKE seconds?

And are there any comparable, but less expensive, brands?

There's no such thing as a "comparable, but less expensive" brand to Hermes. The tie, scarf, other item is either Hermes or not.

There are brands with high cache (Ferragamo) but they're not less expensive.

There are various tie-makers who make similar designs (Brooks Bros., Vineyard Vines) but an Hermes is sui generis.

I LOVE my black & gold Hermes scarf - which was a surprise birthday present from my normally ultra-practical DH one year. I just can't decide if it's worth the risk to bring it to Paris to wear during our trip (though he's promised to replace it if it's stolen). I normally never really wear it much at all, and his comment was that Paris was the perfect place to enjoy it, after all

While I would never by a "second" brand per se as the quality is as important as the cache, if there's an Hermes outlet, I'd sure love to hear about it

"Sui generis," BigRuss -- that's well put, ne c'est pas? If only more good things from the past were that way -- big sigh.

No absolutely not. The scarves are sold at NM but you won't find the bags and other items there or anywhere else.
Sap, if you are wearing jeans or other pants use the scarf as a belt. I wear mine that way alot. you can tie it on your handbag. As for ties,Hermes fabrics have designs that are only theirs. One reason for the high price,

I was at lunch with someone who had her Hermes scarves, artistically wrapped around the handles of her white Hermes Birkin bag in order to protect the handles. Happy Travels!

If you want to have real cachet you should learn how to spell the word!

Sorry but I could not resist.

Agreed, ekskrunchy -- and the problem is that I know better, too. I'm somewhat horrified that I never caught the error. I'll blame it on Russ since I had just read his post before typing mine (just kidding). Alas, I actually have neither enough cachet nor a hidden cache of cash which would be needed for another Hermes scarf!

Oh bugger, I whiffed on that (and I'm usually a very gudd spelor ;-)). Sap's brainwaves were infecting my cerebellum.

Just proves how much cachet I have.

Then, how do you spell catchit? Or does it have an "sh"?

OK...Now that I've reread the other posts, I see that the comment was to Sap. It threw me as it was posted below my post, but not quoted from Sap's post. Happy Travels!

There are Hermes sample sales in Paris, and in New York, every year or so...

Actually, Hermes holds a sale twice a year in Paris: just a few days in January and the end of June. It is NOT held in the boutique, but at the Palais des Congrès. Prices are good; around 40% off, but it is an absolute madhouse! Be prepared to wait in line for at least a couple hours to get in.

Also, you are not likely to see any major handbags like Kellys or Birlkins. Maybe a few totes, small leather goods like wallets, some home decor items, and plenty of scarves.

The sale in NYC is pretty good for clothing and leather, though I did not see any of the coveted handbag styles.

Malleries.com has Hermes and other top bags, previously owned, in excellent condition.

Also www.fashionphile.com in Beverly Hills, has preowned Hermes handbags in top condition. One day I was in there with a few people and one person that I was with noticed her newly-bought Birkin behind the locked glass case and was shocked as she had sold it to a private party. Whomever she sold it to, for one reason or another, decided not to keep it and took it in to Fashionphile. The Hermes handbags sell fast there. They have tons of other designer handbags, too. Happy Travels!

Also for products similar to Hermes, there's www.aprilinparis.us up in San Francisco. I've been up to the boutique and met the owner, Bea and own one of her small items. She's been around a long time and was trained at Hermes Paris and worked there a long time. She has her own collection. She will design a custom bag for clients. Happy Travels!

Just a note re Hermes, I can share that in Japan they do hold 50% off sales twice a year - in select outlets. They are held in Obon (mid August) and Oshougatsu (year end/new year). The sales are not advertised and there is no sign in the window, nor even on the racks. I presume that their established clientele receives a postcard or something.

I stumbled upon this when I was traveling once and went browsing in the Hermes store located inside a major Japanese department store. They had a lot of clothing in the store and I commented that they had much more than the stores I usually went to in Tokyo. The sales assistant said that they had a lot of extra items in stock for the sale.

After I picked my jaw up from the floor I got her to show me around and sure enough, there were hats, clothing and shoes all 50% off (she said a lot of stuff was already gone as it was 3 days into the sale already). Still, I managed to pick up a really nice pair of men's elastic-side boots! Much to my husband's chagrin they were in MY size, not his!

I just checked my e-mail and www.mylittleparis.com has sent an e-mail announcing the Hermes private sale. It is Jan 19,2011-Jan22,2011 and from 9-6 at the Palais des Congres. There's up to 70% off. There's 50% off on the scarves. For more information and invitations go through the My Little Paris Website. Happy Travels!

I just noticed that after going to the above website, click on the flag in the upper, right-hand section, to get the information in English. I've never been on the French page as I subscribe to the newsletter which comes to me in English. Happy Travels!
