midsummer will everything be closed?

Will everything in Helsinki be closed on the 23rd and 24th?

It is highly likely that *something* will be open.

It would be helpful if you told us the significance of these two dates. Is this a religious or national holiday?

Undoubtedly "something" is always open...unfortunately the "something" that is open might not be of any use to you such as a hospital!!

It is the misummer festival in Estonia everything will be closed on those dates. In Sweden I think it is a time of celebtation but dont know. I am trying to plan the last bit of my vacation so needed a little help.

In Finland they (government, employers) did something terrible years ago. They pushed the sacred, beloved, pagan Midsummer into weekend, so the days everything will be closed are 25th and 26th. Helsinki will be like after a neutron bomb, all people retire to their bonfires in the bushes. 23th and 24th are normal working days.

The 23rd and 24th or what? June or July?

elina Jun 17th, 2004 11:39 AM

June, Lolo, June. Midsummer is the years's second biggest fiesta, Christmas is biggest. But unlike Christmas it is purely pagan in origin, to celebrate the year's longest day, "nightless night".
