Midgies in Skye

Does anyone know if there is a "midgie problem" in Skye in the summer? Are there places in Scotland to avoid in the summer b/c of the midgies??

Midges can pop up just about anywhere but more so in the north and west. They have a very short lifespan and need warm damp conditions so you can't really predict when you will run into them. On most of my trips they have been no problem at all but sometimes they are REALLY bad.

They seem to be worst in July/August - but if Sheila sees this thread she may have more specific info.

Agree with the foregoing. Warm and wet is bad. Twilight is the pits. The east is fine. Windy is excellent:)

Thanks to both of you. I'll guess we'll just grin and bear it!

When I was in Skye - I did not find midges a big problem but it was VERY windy. On the other hand near Shin Falls, they drove me nuts - inland not windy.
