Mid-March in Italy - best place to go, weatherwise
A friend has asked me if I'd like to go to Italy with her, and she would get me a ticket using frequent flier miles. So my answer of course, is yes. We are undecided as to where to go, though. We could fly into Rome, Florence or Naples and basically would like to spend our time in the countryside. Weatherwise, where would you suggest where we might have the best chance of good weather at that time of year.

Hi oragnetravelcat, last winter the south of Italy had more snow and cold weather then most of the northern part of Italy. I think I would chose to go to Rome. That way if the weather is miserable there are so many "inside" places you could enjoy. But of course that is not the countryside. So if you flew into Florence there is a lot of "inside places" to enjoy and if the weather is nice you could enjoy the area outside of Florence, the countryside of Tuscany. Lucky you, and what a great friend!

What about a Rome/Assisi combo? Assisi is not the country, but it's a lovely hilltown, especially in the colder/less crowded months, and there are enough indoor things (if you like churches and art!) for a couple of days.

But as a diehard Rome-lover, I agree with LoveItaly. You can't go wrong with Rome.

I have concluded that Rome is the most liveable city I know.

There is much outside Rome but why stray if you don't have to?

We had a deliriously happy time there in March 2005: warm, uncrowded, etc.

And you have so many options if the weather turns bad -- (which it signally and strikingly did not)

Was in Rome at the beg. of March. It was cold and rainy (stormy!) one day and bright and sunny the next. We found ways to adapt to each daily weather forecast.

Loved Rome. March is great because of less crowds. It does make a difference!
