Microfiber Tights? Good for cold weather?

Has anyone used these for keeping warm rather than thermals?

Going to Prague in December and was thinking the thermals might be too bulky.

Thanks.

Microfiber tights will be warmer than nothing or stockings, but will not keep you warm unless made of polypropelene. Try one of the hiking/camping shops.
Another alternative would be long silk underwear instead of thermals. Much less bulky, insulating, and they feel great!

Microfiber is good for keeping moisture away from your skin. However, I'd agree that I prefer silk for warmth. I usually order my silk undergarments from a company called WinterSilks (www.wintersilks.com). They have a really nice selection.

Folks, we're talking about Prague, not Baffin Island. Microfiber tights will be plenty under jeans or other slacks.

Another vote for silk. It keeps you warm and feels much nicer against your skin than microfiber.

Also silk COSTS five times as much; she's only going on a one-week trip!

Uh, Jen, consider this. She could use the underwear for more than this one trip. Think about it.

I would go with just plain old Donna Karan tights. Feel silky, cover your legs and Jen is right, it is still only Prague.
a pair of cashmere socks would also be a good investment, there is nothing so snuggly or warm on your feet!
Silk thermals are great for under clothes and for bed:)

Go for some beautiful, lightweight silks. They're wonderfully comfortable and they can do double duty as sleepwear.

Thanks for all the input.

I think I'll shop around for some silks and if I can find a good deal, I'll get them. Otherwise, tights it is.

Thanks again.

Try TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Ross or other discount retailers in your area.

You can buy some thin long underwear like Cuddleduds fairly cheaply and it's not bulky at all (I don't think it's silk, but might be, it's a nicer feel and blend than just thermal cotton). I get that on sale for only $10-15 a piece (bottoms or top). The idea of wearing microfiber tights all day is awful to me, I find them very uncomfortable, but if you like them, why not take some. I think there are lots of female long underwear options you might not be aware of. Most standard dept stores have Cuddleduds (and also Sears and Penneys, I think).

I am always freezing, so I know a good bit about long underwear. I am also very long legged, so need tall sizes. Wintersilks wins it hands down. About $23 for the lightweight long bottoms in talls, maybe dollar or two less for regulars. CuddleDuds also have a very nice feel without the bulk, but they don't come in talls and cost as much as the wintersilks. They are a synthetic fiber. The silk ones are machine washable, by the way.

Another vote for silks. As soon as I wash them, they go back into my suitcase, lying in wait for the next trip.

Thanks for all the help.

I'm going to look really hard for some silk thermals and leather/lined gloves.
