Microbreweries in Ireland? Dublin?
 

Though Ireland, especially Dublin, is synonymous with The Black Stuff, I was wondering if the recent popularity of other beer types in Ireland has resulted in any microbreweries popping up. If so, where can these be found and which ones are the best?

As a lot of pubs in Dublin and the rest of Ireland are tied to the big Multinational Conglomerates that have swallowed up Guinness, Murphys and Beamish, the main manufacturers of Irish Stout it is welcomed that a few microbreweries have appeared here and there, espescially in the capital, namely Maguire's in Burgh Quay and the Porterhouse in Parliament Street. Most other pubs around Ireland seem to serve a limited and boring collection of "no longer Irish owned" stout plus Budweiser and Carlsberg lager. Monotony rules in these cases.

There are a few microbreweries like the Dublin Brewing Co and one in Carlow (Carlow Brewing Co??). These are in addition to the poterhouse whoich is a microbrew pub the others only brew. They would not be the most popular of beers but some pubs around smothfield serve the Dublin Brewing co. beers and ciders like Maveve's and Revolution beer. They do have a bar in the brewery on N. King street but oits for private funstions and you get a tour when you rent it out.

Guinness is not even Irish owned anymore. Diageo (Spanish?) own it now and there was talk about closing the headquarters in Ireland but it never happened. It would ruin the whole image if they did not brew any Guinness in Dublin.

Porterhouse is great. They sell every beer you can think of and brew their own various Irish stouts.

There's an excellent one in Cork called Franciscan Well Brewery. It's situated on the North Mall, about 5 minutes walk from the Shandon Steeple.

My personal favourite is Rebel Red. Mmmmm, roll on Friday night.

Diaego was formed in 1997 with the merger of Guinness and GrandMet of the UK.Where the absurd name Diaego came from is a mystery.

Visit the Biddy Early Brewery in the little town of Inagh on the road from Ennis to Doolin. You can't miss it because there is little else ther. It's on the left right at the crossroads. Fine beer.

Kinsale Brewery, new two years ago. Lovely Pub on the premises. Two types of Ale and a Lager to die for. Right in the middle of the village.
