Metro in Prague

Is the metro system easy to use in Prague? I'm going by myself and plan to use the train but am a little nervous. Are the stops and destinations by any chance listed in English also? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

We're just back from Prague, and to be quite honest, only used the metro once.... We found the trams to be a bit more user friendly, and easier to work out where we should be getting off. I think I also got a little freaked the first time we went on the metro, as I got knocked over by a whole bunch of bustling housewives with their shopping trolleys! I enjoyed just riding around on the trams and seeing more of the city!

Maybe someone else would be able to give you better advice on the metro!

Prague has had a metro for the last 28 years and is still expanding it.

We used it when we were there in ’97 to get to the castle and the nicest thing I can say about it is that it works.

I would suggest avoiding it if you can, Prague is a small city and you see much more by staying above ground.
The system is easy to use in that it only has three lines. Unless things have greatly changed in the last couple of years neither the destinations nor the announcements on the train are in English. However the names of each stop are easily visible and posted several times in each station. The tram is actually more difficult in this sense, since it's harder to see what stop you are coming into if you can't understand the announcement, although of course by looking out the window you can get some sense of where you are. If you are staying exclusively in the center you really don't have to ride it. There are a few pickpockets that lurk around the tourist area, but they're above ground too. I took the metro into the center of town every day for a year as an obvious foreigner and had about 5 incidents and no robberies involving pickpockets, so it's not an overwhelming menace.

Take the tram instead, it is so easy to use. All stops are well posted.

I think the Prague metro is very easy to use, easier than the trams. If you've taken metro systems in Paris or Washington DC, it's very similar. As far as the stops listed in English, no they aren't but the stops are Czech names -- a name is a name, that's what you look for (only a couple could be translated to English in any way that would make sense). For example, the name of one neighborhood is Vysehrad and that's the name of the stop, that can't be English. I think you're just worrying too much, when you think about it, whatever you are looking for will have the name of the stop in Czech (whether from a guidebook or map, etc), and you look for that name.

The Prague metro is very easy to use. The 3 different routes are color coded. Get a good map of Prague. Most city maps have a metro map included. If you are flying into the airport, go to the transporation booth and get a map and a multi day ticket. These tickets are good for the metro and trams. When you go down the escalator to the metro platform, there will be a track on the left and right side. This can be confusing as to what side of the platform to stand. Look up and you will see a chart with the stops on it. The stops on the left half are for the left track and the stops on the right side are for the right track. Also notice the color of the sign. Also, after you get on the metro, there are signs above the
door showing the stops. Find your stop on this chart and count the number of stops to where you want to get off. It is very easy.
