Meteora, Greece Dress Code for Men & Women
 

Hello,
DH and I will be visiting Greece in September and will be spending time in Meteora to see the monasteries. I understand that women need to wear a long skirt, so I have a cotton crinkle-skirt I will be packing. The tour we are taking states that men & women need to wear long sleeves, but I have read other posts on Fodors where people stated that "shoulders must be covered."

If you have visited the monasteries, could you please clarify the dress code? Are short sleeves acceptable (shoulders covered), or do we both need to take long-sleeve shirts?

It was cool when I was there, so everyone was in long sleeves regardless - I don't recall if it was required There is no need to bring a long skirt just for this occasion, however - they have sort of wrap-around long skirts there for no charge that you can just tie over whatever you have on

I was there in June, my shirt was about 3/4 length sleeve, and I had long skirt. Make sure and wear good walking /climbing shoes. Tons of stairs.

I went to great trouble to make sure I wore a skirt and covered my head, but honestly no one seemed to care - there were women in shorts. My personal feeling is that when visiting another's place of worship it is respectful to follow their rules/customs. So I would wear a skirt and at least short sleeves. I certainly wasn't in long sleeves and neither was my husband as it was quite hot. (do bring some tissues tho - the toilets were holes in the ground lol)

Thank you for your responses. I do have a long skirt I plan to wear and will definitely cover my shoulders. And it looks like DH will be ok in long slacks and a short-sleeve shirt.

We will be on a tour, so hopefully that will mitigate some of the stairs, but it's always good to work off any ice cream or pastries one may have eaten on vacation.

I just came back and was wearing a skort above the knees and was given a complimentary long wrap to wear. So GLAD I wore a skort because that day was hot and all the monasteries we went to had wraps to wear. I would not wear shorts inside without using a wrap as it would be disrespectful.

skirts would be cooler than skorts or pants, anyway

I'm sure you will be fine, and Meteora was one of the highlights of our trip to Greece last year. but word of warning, tour or no, there is no way to reach the monasteries without climbing the stairs (unless you want to go up the old way in a bucket lol) As long as you are in ok shape thought the stairs are not too steep or scary (I'm not great with heights but had no fear at all climbing these - just had to stop every once in a while to rest). enjoy!
