I think a thread about the Red Light District in Amsterdam was just deleted. It included some quarreling about "values." I am really sorry to see this go and hope this kind of thing isn't kept up. And: Ladies and Gentlemen: this is what we are in for in an age of tightened security--the conflict is real, I think, and no joke. This is a mini-example of a different, less free world.
I want us all to be safe, but I dread the atmosphere of the police state. And I am a middle-aged white woman, not all that likely to be "policed", except for answering a question about the Red Light District on a message board.

Some conservative posters here remind me of the Taliban - what's sad is that Fodors caters to their mypoic warp views.

I wouldn't be surprised if some tight clenched conservative asshole doesn't complain about this thread and it too will soon disappear.

P.S. Did anyone else see a certain jowley cheeked creep on Geraldo last night? His fat neck practically cascaded down to his chest - isn't gluttony one of the 7 sins?

Annette Sep 20th, 2001 10:10 AM

I saw Porky Pig on Geraldo last night. And, yes, hmmmm, I also thought his fleshy countenance did betray some deep and serious sinning.

I am in agreement with the Taliban about immorality in Western societies. One of the most glaring examples of this immorality is Amsterdam's Red Light District. Why should immorality like this be discussed on a travel board?

In a moral society, no one would be having sex for money, no one would be watching other people have sex, and no one would be having sex if they were not in a union blessed by God. We need to bring back morality into our society. If we don't, we could incur God's wrath.

On a more serious note, Fodors foes pay for and maintain this site. If they delete your post merely because it contains the letter "b" they are within their rights. If you don't like it, start your own bboard somewhere else.

NoName Sep 20th, 2001 11:10 AM

Okay, putup, some of us actually HAVE started another board. We're tired of being bashed, battered & sworn at by people who have NOT spent as much time here & feel that their point of view is absolutely the one & only one to be represented & go crying to Fodor's about an "offensive post" when, in actuality, it's merely an "opposing point of view post"! (and YOU obviously haven't been invited to join the other site...I wonder why!)

Sorry noname. I'm not trying to be rude as you seem to think. It just amazes me that people take advantage of a free service and then bitch about it. How much revenue do you think Fodors is gaining from this board? I would venture a guess that the forums cost Fodors wuite a bit to maintain. I would also guess that a large number of the whiners have never bought a Fodors product. Please note that I said "a large number" and not "all" or even "most". My whole point is that you get what you pay for. If you aren't happy with this board, set up a Yahoo! e-group. Just to get even with you, no-name, I just set up my own group and you can't join. I hope that was juvenile enough for you.

NoName Sep 20th, 2001 11:34 AM

You'd be the expert on that, putup.

And after you've bitched about people who bitch, it's a little too late to proclaim (with I'm sure the greatest of sincerity) that you didn't mean to be rude. It's kind of like invoking the death penalty to kill people in order to teach them that killing people is wrong.

I forgot to mention, I have never asked to have a post deleted. Not much offends me, I have pretty thick skin. I do find a lot of posts here to be rather boorish, but there is more than enough useful info here to make it worth wading through the crap.

hmmmm Sep 20th, 2001 11:41 AM

I feel as if I should mention something about travel or I may get.....help I'm being deleted...fanny packs are a no no in....zappp!!!

putup Sep 20th, 2001 11:49 AM

I'm not going to get into a pissing contest with you, noname. Re-read my original post and tell me where I bitched or was in the least bit rude. I merely pointed out a fact that many people here and across the 'net in general commonly overlook. Don't expect a BUSINESS to devote a lot of manpower on a venture that does not generate revenue. Don't expect Fodors employees to spend a lot of time reading every message to determine if one might be offensive. Don't be suprised if they delete posts that criticise them or if they make a mistake and delete a post that wasn't offensive. It's free, what the hell do you expect for free? I'm not bitching, I just can't comprehend that attitude.

No Doubt Sep 20th, 2001 04:48 PM

Actually, this board is better without all the "pompous asses" that used to bore people to death. I can imagine the "new club". Talk about nerds and bores. Reminds one a little of small
town that wants an "exclusive" country club. Yawn...

Travel Girl Sep 22nd, 2001 11:54 AM

Memory?

Anyone consider that there's probably a limited amount of memory/storage space for the travel talk bb. Could be we're near the maximum and Fodors merely has to prioritize. We could do without the flaming.

tg

I, for one, come to this site for travel information. I find the rudeness and crassness of some of the posters childish and uncalled for. When I start reading a thread that turns into people bashing, then I stop reading. If it weren't for the genuine people here who want to be of some assistance to others, I wouldn't bother with it at all.
