Polly, I do alot of sewing and I am trying to visualize your instructions. Is there any concern the pocket will get too long and flop against your thigh too much. I'm getting a picture in my head and it's getting a little risque ;;)

For our trip to Rome I did hand baste velcro inside my husbands front pants pockets to secure them. It worked perfectly or at least no one tried to get to his wallet ;;) Deborah

I'm not getting the risque image but one of a hunchback with fleas. I made one pocket longer than my fingertips could reach so whenever I needed to fish out something small like a coin or chapstick, I had to twist over at the waist and fumble. (Pocket was long enough that it didn't look like anything obscene. I don't think.)

I probably should have said what you're doing with the pocket thing is making a new pocket bottom with a patch pocket inside. Then maybe people could figure out what I was talking about without getting terminally confused by the directions. Another advantage to the longer pocket, apart from things not falling out or people not as easily reaching in, is that if the main part is at your thigh instead of crotch level, you don't bend things when you sit down. I stuck my passport in a short patch pocket after leaving immigration last week, forgot about it and sat down. Now it's kind of U-shaped. (Maybe I'm too fat. Too much Greek food.)

I looked again at the Dockers site and see that, despite their lovely little animated promo for the Mobile pants, those don't show up in any other listings. Stupid that they keep that thing on the site if they don't make the pants. But, as I said, they can turn up in the off price and outlet stores as well as those pseudo Dockers/Levis "outlets" at the so-called outlet malls.

Most pants have the secret pocket. some shut with a zipper, others (inside the normal pocket) with velcro.

As mentioned, pricey but durable.

Did you know that the National Geographic Society has an online store that sells travel clothing? Many folks do not.
I have their Global Travel Jacket (I bought it at Syms for under $50) and it is a terrific jacket that looks good has sealed pockets within sealed pockets both inside and out, sheds rain pretty well, dries in a jif, and hardly gets wrinkles. It even has a special ipod pocket with a channel where you can thread the earbuds up through the inside. NG has it on sale now for $99.

When we had to buy a pair of pants for my husband in Nice (luggage delay) we found Peter Polo cords, which have a back pocket with a button. Getting into the pocket (which also has a thick overlay) is difficult when the pants are off, let alone on. Wouldn't work for anything you needed to take out often, but great for a passport and spare credit cards.

I like the same kind of pants a have used 5.11 Tactical pants. These are found in police uniform stores around the country and also on line. I have worn them on two trips to Europe and can tell you that the side pockets have velcro faseners and you would be able to tell if anyone tried to open the pocket. They are comfortable, look good, wear well and don't cost an arm and a leg. They are also machine washable and has some water repelling qualities. There are several different styles, some won't work for you, like camo styles. I wear the tactical style. Check them out here:
