I have read all your comments and you are all missing the most imp. fact. Dress to feel relaxed. I plan to wear my Nike shoes, levys, cargo shorts, polo shirts (no sayings in Eng. to make them guess), maybe a real madrid/Barc soccer shirt. I speak Span but they will know I am not local. Besides, they just raised their AVT to 21%. They need our money and as long as I not rude. I am sure that if they visit the USA nobody will care what they wear. Above all, use common sense.

Actually, for some of us, the point is to be comfortable and project pleasing visual style at the same time. It can be done. I always encourage every traveler to try.

Not a great surprise - given June and early July's weather - but from all I've seen down here in the south (Ischia, Naples, Benevento and around), 2012 could very well be remembered as the "Year of the Hat".... with headwear of all sorts on display!

I am an "old" man and I guess I am the exception, but I try to dress a "cut above" whatever seems to the "popular" traveler dress. It has served me well numerous times with the airlines, restaurants, etc. I also find it is easier to get a pair of slacks cleaned than jeans washed and dried. I always take the blue blazer even tho I seldom wear it during the day.

"As for shorts - adult europeans keep them for resorts or athletic activities. "
When was the last time you traveled Europe? I'm currently in my second week in Southern France, having brought one pair of shorts to perhaps wear on the beach. But in cafes, streets, shopping, markets, in every town we've been in the local men, even rather elderly seem to all be wearing shorts, except for those who wear those very popular "Capri" lengths that I see everywhere. I'm not just talking Nice or Saint Tropez, but Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Avignon, and all over Provence. It's been hot and I wished I brought more shorts. The fashion for men I was used to in the past seems to have greatly changed. Locals wear shorts -- and trainers!

I am in Italy now and have seen so many locals wearing NY Yankee baseball caps. They sell them all over. It's our team so we get a few laughs from it . And as mentioned above, tee shirts with English writing, lots of California themed shirts, are worn by Italians. Inexpensive straw hats are for sale too. Lots of Capri length pants seen on men here too.
If you plan to visit a church, wear long pants. Our friend wasn't allowed in in wearing shorts.
