Meeting Up at Milan's MXP Airport

For our trip to Europe, my friend and I both will be arriving into MXP from Zurich at the exact same time. But the kicker is that we'll both be flying on different airlines. He's flying on United and I'm flying on Swiss International Air Lines/Swiss European Air Lines.

My question is two parts:

1. We're flying from the US and have a layover in Zurich. Since Switzerland is not part of the EU, will we have to go through customs twice? Or do we go through customs just once in Zurich or Milan?

2. Where would be the best way for us to meet up at the airport? If we have to go through customs in Milan, would it be better for us to wait for each other right after passing through customs? Or would it be better to meet up at baggage claim? And for those two airlines, would we be in the same baggage claim area?

You are both flying ZRH-MXP, arriving at EXACT the same time, but one is on "United" and the other is on "SWISS"?

Are they really different planes? A look at seem to indicate that the only "real" carrier on this route seem to be the Swiss International. Everyone else seem to be the code share of the same flight. For example, LX1616 and UA9796 for tomorrow are different names for the same flight.

Switzerland is part of the Schengen agreement.

You will go through passport control in Zurich.

MXP - Malpense - is a fairly small airport. If you're going into Milan, I suggest you meet at the bus ticket office.

Are you both staying in Milan? Meet at your hotel.

Nothing worse than hanging around an airport when you are exhausted because somebody else's flight was delayed -- or worrying all the time when you are on a flight that is delayed that your friend is suffering, waiting hours for you by a bus ticket office.

Do check with your airlines - it does appear that you will be on the same plane.

And yes, you will be going through Immigration in Zurich, since the ongoing fliigt is considered domestic.
