Meal times in Budapest?
Can anyone tell me what the "standard" meal times (for lunch and dinner)are in Budapest? And do the natives typically eat their main meal at mid-day instead of at night? I am going with frinds to Budapest in September, and I am in charge of making some restaurant reservations. I am not sure what time(s) we should eat. Any help?
Thanks! |
Locals have their main meal of the day around 1:00 p.m. and a lighter meal in the evening. However, you can easily eat your main meal at dinnertime. It's not "set in stone" as it is in Spain, for example, so you can go ahead and make evening restaurant reservations if you wish.

As a tourist I think it's always better to have your main meal at night. After all, who wants to eat a big meal with wine and then have to spend the rest of the afternoon touring around feeling half-asleep.
We usually do a light lunch at 1 or 1:30, a drink (oftenjust cold) stop at about 5 and then a nice dinner at 8 or 8:30. that way you have time to relax, enjoy dinner and just take a nice stroll afterwards - instead of rushing to make an entrance time or pushing yourelf on a long walk when you would rather relax. |
I have just returned from Budapest and there were hordes of people eating in the evening.
If you are looking for somewhere with lots of restaurants and very resonable prices try the Raday Utca (I think that is what it is called - near the University. There are loads of restaurants to suit all tastes. I loved Budapest, enjoy your trip |
