Mayor of Rome wants to eliminate Via dei Fori Imperiali

I'd vote for this guy!

He envisions the removal of this street from Piazza Venezia to the Colosseum and the creation of a massive archeological park re-uniting the Roman Forum and the forums of Trajan, Augustus, Caesar and Nerva. The absence of cars would reduce emissions and vibrations in the area which are eroding and damaging the stones and ruins.

Unfortunately, I might not live to see this. Mayor Marino thinks it might take 25-30 years to complete.

I've heard a couple radio interviews with the mayor, about this and making Rome more bike friendly. Nice!

We attended the Republica day march in Rome this year, great idea to close this road. Creates a great pedestrian walkway, the march takes this route.

Both the major and PM would appear to have a brain which is a new development for Italian politicians. The PM was not well received at the march but he is making in roads.

The local taxi drivers are up in arms about the closure but locals moan about everything the world over. The more convoluted routes will allow them to charge even more for a short journey.

Local taxi drivers (a closed shop) would complain, great idea.

Local taxi drivers (a closed shop) would complain, great idea.

Rule of thumb - if taxi drivers are against it then it must be a good idea

"Making Rome more bike friendly".

The starting point is zero.

We rented bikes from the hire shop at the end of the Appia Antica. We were sternly warned not to cycle on the original sections of the road, so as to preserve the flagstones. We were given a detailed map to indicate the section where we should use the dirt path at the side of the road.

We were slightly confused and bemused to find locals using these sections to skip the traffic jams and use the Via Appia Antica as a short cut. Very amused to see an elderly Australian tourist shouting f***ing terrorists at the motorists. I pointed out it was their national heritage they were ruining.

Up to the usual standards of Italian idiotic standards, this was all taking place outside the local police station.

We were extremely annoyed with the usual suspect numpties following their tour party leaders round the tiny streets of the old town. This time on bikes, up to 30 of them in a group, pinging bells and pushing everyone out of the way.
