mayfair area hotel recommendation
Still looking for a hotel for our Sept. 08 trip to London! A lot of people seem to recommend staying in the Mayfair area of London so I am wondering if anyone knows any specific hotels that they have had good experiences with and would return to if given the chance. Budget is open now (it was more limited before when more people were going but it is now just me and my husband) so all suggestions would be appreciated!! The only thing we want to be sure of is that the hotel is clean.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Actually - not that many people recommend staying in Mayfair unless one is on an unlimited budget. That is about the most expensive hotel neighborhood in London.
I know you say the budget is "open" - but that is often not the case. How much are you expecting to pay??

Janis,
Okay I guess I should say "more open" than it was before when we had more people coming with us. If I had to put a number on it, I would probably say up to about $500/night would be a possibility. I am just having a hard time narrowing down all of the hotels in London. Its not like here in the US where as a general assumption, you know what you are getting when you stay at the usual Holiday Inn v. a Hilton v. Ritz Carlton. I have never heard of most of the hotels that I am finding in London, and the reviews that I have read don't always match what I would expect based on the price of the rooms. And its hard for me to figure out which locations would be best just by looking at a map.
If you don't agree with the Mayfair area, do you have any recommendations for a hotel in any part of London? Even if its expensive or above our preferred range, it would still help! Thanks!

You have to get used to the fact that rooms in London will usually be smaller and more expensive than comparable properties in the States.
Some places I'd consider would include Hilton Green Park, Marriott County Hall, Renaissance Chancery Court, and the Royal Horseguards. Those should get you started.

I stayed at the Mayfair Holiday Inn several years ago. It's across and down the street from the Ritz. Great location. The hotel is very adequate - nothing terribly special. Can't remember what I paid for it. Oh, and nice hot buffet breakfast.

In 2003 I stayed at the Marriott Marble Arch and loved it. The rooms were very comfortable, it was close to the tube, and right across the street from Hyde Park. I can't remember if it was in Mayfair or just right next to it. I just checked online and rates in September should fall into your range. I highly recommend this hotel. (caveat - have not stayed anywhere else in London, but this was great )

We really enjoyed staying at the Chesterfield Mayfair. The rooms are not large but they are charming and well-decorated. The staff is very friendly and the location is terrific. It's in a great neighborhood to walk around in the evening. It's also close to Shepherd's Market restaurants and a few other good pubs.

I have stayed at Fleming's Mayfair on Half Moon St. several times. It's a great place. They will usually have some type of special rate. Rooms are large by UK standards, they also have apartments available. Check with roomsnet.com, or gtahotels, com. They usually have pretty good rates for this hotel. It is in the Shepherd market area, around the corner from Green Park tube.

I have stayed often at Claridge's, but only on business. Its a great hotel, but very expensive. I have also stayed at the Connaught, but again, I've never paid to do so.
Staying in London is like staying in New York or Paris -- great hotels spread throughout the city, all close to the tube (or subway or metro).
I don't think anyone can suggest an area unless you provide some indication of what type of area you'd like to stay in.
As a tourist, I've generally stayed around Russell Square or Covent Garden, since those areas are central and near a tube stop.
But, again, as long as you're near a tube stop, it hardly matters.

On our first three visits to London we stayed at Brown's (before the renovations) and loved it; a bit too contempory for me now.
Fourth visit for a quick weekend we stayed at Holiday Inn Mayfair. It was fine.
Last six visits we have stayed at the Chesterfield Mayfair. We love this hotel. Excellent in every respect. Contact the hotel directly for best rate and make sure you get one inclusive of their delicious breakfast.
