May Weather in Italy

Have never been to Italy in the Springtime. Could anyone give me an idea as to what type weather I might expect. Traveling from Venice to Rome to Sorrento to Tuscany. Will be gone the whole month of May.

Rain no doubt to be expected, but will the days be warm and the evenings chilly? Will a jacket/sweater be required most evenings? Will people be dining outside?

Grazie for your help.

In Rome, you can definitely expect some outdoor dining in May. You might see it in some parts of Tuscany as well. Tuscany will still be cool, with highs most likely in the 60s. Rome will be a bit warmer, with highs in the 70s, possibly reaching low 80s. A light jacket or sweater should be expected for most evenings as well as for daytime in Tuscany. Good luck.

It will vary from north to south. here is a good comparison:
Rome is Atlanta
Venice is Wash. DC
Tuscany is NC
Amalfi coast is Savannah

I love May in Italy--you will too.

We found everywhere in Italy (but we've done only from Amalfi area and north) beautifully warm in May. A light jacket may - or may not - be needed in the evening. And we did lots of outdoor dining. We've had one or two day of cool/substantial rain - out of perhaps 30/40 days in May in italy (over 5 different trips).

This past May we stayed in Verona for 8 nights and it was unseasonably (we were told) cool and rainy. The hotel we were staying in automatically shuts off the heat at the end of April so we were rather chilly at night. I wish I'd brought warmer jammies! It may be worth checking with your hotel in Venice to see if you would have heat if you needed it.

Even though it was chilly, we still enjoyed many meals outside. I'll take 60F and an occasional shower over 90F any day.

USA Today has a website

http://www.usatoday.com/weather/reso...e/worldcli.htm

that will give you historical data for specific cities.

Pick your hometown as a base and compare it to where you're going.

eurogals, I have been in Venice in May when it stormed and was very cold. Then two days later it was beautiful spring weather. Do pack so that if it is cold and rainy you will be all right. Layering is the way to go.

Also, good advise to check with the hotel regarding heat.

Have personally never had rain in Rome but of course that doesn't mean it couldn't happen.

Have a fun trip!

eurogals,
My husband and I spent the last 2 weeks in April and the first week of May last year in the same areas you are visiting. I know that weather is predictably unpredictable, but sometimes it does help to get a feel for what you might expect from others who have gone before you. In our case it was much warmer than we'd expected ranging from upper 60s to mid 70s. We took trench coat type raincoats but mostly carried them around. We are returning this year and will pack a lighter jacket and items that work well for layering instead--that will probably be enough to insure we'll see cooler, wetter weather this time.

We did a lot of outside dining and were never uncomfortable. It did get chilly on the vaporetto in the evening, or maybe my goosebumps were just from the thrill of the views from the Grand Canal. Have a wonderful time. Diane

You might check out weatherunderground.com and do a history check. We're going to be in Italy in May also and I think layering is probably the way to go (plus, let's face it--it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if you had to pick up something there!)

Hi eurogals, I forgot to mention. I love Italy in May! And rain in Venice is very beautiful if one is dressed warmly.

IMHO nothing is worse then weather in Italy that is too hot and with high humidity. I was concerned maybe I came across negative - and sure didn't mean to. Spring in Italy, paradiso!

Hi,

We were in Venice, Florence and Rome in mid/late May, 2004. We were very fortunate with the weather. In general, we had 70's during the day, but we definately had some low/mid 80's too. At night, we typically would wear long sleeves, maybe a sweater and sometimes a light jacket. It was colder at night in Venice (our first stop). We ate dinner and lunch outside several times. We were lucky enough to only have rain 1 day, but it poured that day! Just be prepared for everything!
