May Weather- Greece or Amalfi Coast

We will be honeymooning May 15-May 31 2006.
We are trying to decide between Greece ( Mykonos and Santorini with 2 nights in Athens) OR the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

We live in Chicago so when people tell us the Greek Isklands may be "cool" in May we are not sure exactly what cool means.

We would like to be able to spend time at the beaches and pools without being chilly. Is this possible in Greece in May? We are not into hot and steamy but 70's are nice.

Both countries have alot to offer so to be honest weather is the number 1 determining factor.

Thanks in advance

We spent a week on the Amalfi Coast May 14-20, 2005.
We had one day of rain. Every other day was sunny. It was quite warm (80s) but the ocean was too cold for swimming.
Perfect weather for sightseeing (Pompeii, Capri, Naples, Paestum, Amafi Coast towns, etc.)

Was in Santorini for the last week of April/first week of May. Days were perfect - sunshine (only 1 day of clouds) and mid 70's during the day. Evenings were chillier and I was very glad I brought a sweater for evening meals outside.

The Amalfi coast should be beautiful then - warm but not to hot. We swam only in the pool (because there ws no beach nearby in Sorrento) but did stick our feet in the sea a couple of times - and it didn;t seem cold at all.

Caveat: Since we're from NYC we're used to the North Atlantic - from memorial day on. And can;t stand the water in Florida - way too hot - feel like I'm being boiled like a lobster. To me water should always be refeshing (chilly) vs the air temp.

I live in Chicago too - so I can relate to the Chicago version of cold weather.

Havent been to Greece but spent 4 days in Ravello on AC in the last week of May 2004. We were blessed with great weather. Sunny and in the mid 70's every day. The evenings were cooler - even into the low 50's when the sun went down -so a jacket and or sweater was helpful. Long pants too.

There were many people on the beach in Positano during that time and it was good for pool weather too. Just before our vacation, earlier in May, the weather had been very cool and rainy so we were truly blessed.

Had the same experience this year in France during the same time frame. South of France was sunny, 70's and beautiful everyday.

Hope that helps.

The weather in mykonos and santorini
should be comfortably warm 80's and sunny. If laying, walking, sleeping on beaches is important to you, pick
Greece as the Amalfi coast really has
very limited stretches of beach, that
generally can be difficult to reach.

I have been in mykonos at the end of may, the water might be coolish, but not too cold that you can't swim. It really
will depend on how warm the weather will
be at that time. I'm from
New england, so didn't bother me
And it won't be so crazy busy on the islands at this time, should be very
romantic, amazing sunsets on both islands.

Hi lmem,

Two weeks on the Amalfi Coast is more than enough.

You might want to consider a week on the AC combined with a week in Venice and Florence.
