May

Tickets bought, intinerary set, then a thought came to mind:

Will there be wildflowers blooming anywhere in late May? Lupines, poppies, or other?

If so, where might be the best spot to catch such splashes of color? We're doing the ring road.

I hoping to see the verdant spring green I've seen in pictures-- is that likely in May? Or will it be the green-brown of recovering grass that I see out my Massachusetts windows?

Well, here in southern England, the meadows and hedgerows are awash with spring flowers right now.

Might be different in southern Turkey or Sweden north of the Arctic Circle. But since you're keeping so quiet about where you've got in mind, hard to help you.

Lol...here in Germany, there are flowers blooming...of course, there were two weeks ago also - with snow on the ground :)...first place I've lived where you look out your window, see wonderful flowers AND snow...

OK - WHERE are you talking about???

From your other threads it might be Iceland. But who knows . . . . . . .

jdraper Apr 5th, 2007 05:28 AM

I also was wondering where in the world you are going. I know that all of the azeleas are in bloom here in South Carolina now but I seriously doubt that is your destination of choice. Give us a hint global or you may hear floral reports from around the world and still never get the answer you are seeking. Isn't it funny how we become so wrapped up in planning our own trips that we forget that everyone doesn't already know our destination? An easy mistake to make but funny in this context.

Given that the OP mentioned the Ring Road it seems pretty obvious that the trip is to Iceland.

If that is the case the answer is that it probably depends on what the early spring has been like and where you are. In more sheltered, lower and south facing locations you may well find a reasonable amount of blooming, especially towards the end of the month.

Incidentally the lupins are a pest, they were imported and are now running rampant.

Ring Road might be obvious to those who have done some research and know it is located in Iceland For those of us who have never contemplated a trip to Iceland it wasn't quite so obvious.

There are other ring roads besides the "famous one" in Iceland.

"There are other ring roads besides the "famous one" in Iceland."

- it could be the M25... ;)

janisj Apr 5th, 2007 06:13 AM

"- it could be the M25... " I hear the bluebells are especially fine at junction 6 this year :)

Maria_H Apr 5th, 2007 06:17 AM

- and if the traffic is bad enough, you will have plenty of time to view them ;)

flanneruk Apr 5th, 2007 06:18 AM

Could be the Afghanistan Ring Road.

Bet there's LOADS of poppies there.

globalgourmand Apr 5th, 2007 07:26 AM

Uh-oh, I've caused a little ruckus! Yes, ICELAND in May. Sorry, I forgot that if you post in the Iceland forum, it will still show up for open Europe!

So... wildflowers in Iceland in May? :P

monicapileggi Apr 5th, 2007 07:36 AM

Sure, it will still post in the Europe board, but you need to remember to be clear in your title and message. :D

No ruckus, just amusement. An easy mistake to make.

I just read through this, and when I saw "ring road" I guessed Ring of Kerry in Ireland. I never would have guessed Iceland, since I had no reason to know that.

JudyC Apr 5th, 2007 11:25 AM

If the weather is warm enough, perhaps you could see some lupines, but no poppies.

I visited Iceland in late June, saw millions purple lupines everywhere, but no green hills as England, hard to grow on lava fields, perhaps?

globalgourmand Apr 5th, 2007 08:30 PM

Thanks Judy! I will hope to see some Lupines then!

And just wondering, when DO poppies usually bloom?
