May 2007 Italy Itinerary - Comments/Suggestions?
Okay, I've been mulling this over and researching for several months now, and I think I've finally got it. But then again, nothing's completely set in stone yet. Here's my draft itinerary. Comments and suggestions for sights to see, activities, etc. are most welcome.
May 7 Depart SFO
May 8 Arrive Rome, stay at Navona Suites
May 8-11 Explore Rome
May 12 Fly to Catania, Sicily, rent car & drive to rental apt in Torre Archirafi, near Riposto
May 12-18 Explore eastern Sicily (Mt. Etna, Taormina, Syracusa, Noto)
May 19 Train/bus to Sorrento - stay at Il Nido
May 20 Explore Sorrento or Positano
May 21 Daytrip to Pompeii
May 22 Hydrofoil to Naples
May 23-24 Explore Naples, incl. Archeological Museum
May 25 Depart Naples to SFO
The trickiest part for me so far is figuring out how to best get from Catania to Sorrento. My BF would prefer to take the train rather than ferry or fly, but I'm not sure where to make connections to get to Sorrento. Train to Salerno and take 2 SITA buses or train all the way to Naples, then come back on the Circumvesuviana or ? Looking for quickest way, since the train is about 7 hours. Any advice?

If you are going to have a car in Sicily, check out the possibility of driving it to Salerno. From there you have a number of options for transportation to Sorrento. If you want, you can even drive the car to Sorrento avoiding the Amalfi Drive, unless you don't think you'd mind that stretch.
It's possible the car rental company would charge you a fee for taking it off Sicily. It still might be worth the fee -- and there might not be a fee. I don't know. Check with AutoEurope and Hertz.
